I fell asleep

I enjoyed parts of this film, but in the middle I honestly fell asleep.

Drunk?

reply

More like bored stiff. But it did get interesting in the end.

reply

I can see that. I almost dozed off too.

reply

Did you see it late at night? Honestly, since I've been going to films in the mornings or early afternoon, I enjoy them so much more. Those reclining seats in theaters nowadays are so comfortable, it is easy to drift off... ZZZZzzzzzzz

reply

Yeah it was late on a Friday after a long day at work. I sunk into the chair. I enjoy Tarantino movies, but also had the same issue with Grindhouse, loooooong drawn out pointless dialogue. It was about as entertaining as the Wall Street Journal.

reply

I saw Grindhouse on cable, so i could pause it. In general, I have stopped seeing films or plays on weeknights. I went to see a play with two of my favorite actors (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) on a Thursday night once--- slept through the first act and woke up at intermission when the audience was clapping wildly. Then I drifted off again in the second act. I take very expensive naps....

reply

DiCrapeo will do that. I may rent it with only Margot in it a little bit. If I fall asleep also I can always go back and watch where I left off.

reply

And probably will fall asleep again.

reply

Then you were tired.

No one falls asleep because a film is boring or you are not enjoying it.

Films dont cause you to fall asleep.. it's a complete myth.

You may not even realise you are tired, but sitting down in the dark, making yourself comfortable etc. .its very common to fall asleep.

And if you dong agree ask yourself this...have you never fell asleep during a movie you were enjoying?

Very few people will answer that question honestly.

reply

I fall asleep watching Netflix all the time, even if I am enjoying the movie. You are correct, it has nothing to do with whether the movie is boring or action packed.

reply

I've been tired at movies before and haven't fell asleep. This movie was ok at the outset, in the middle it dragged and seemed to lose it's focus then it refocused back.

I've seen better Tarantino films.

reply

Boring!

reply

I beg to differ. I saw the movie twice and wasn't bored once.

reply

I’ve seen it 3 times and haven’t fallen asleep yet. :)

reply

The OPs post.

reply

no way

reply

Yeah it was a different kind of movie, not much action, but imo was mostly about immersion. The details in the scenery...its like we had a literal portal into 1969 and I found myself completely enraptured/enamored. Tarantino is some kind of perfectionist...this movie was a visceral treat and more than entertaining in that regard; nap wasn't any kind of possibility for me.
Great fricking film.

reply

Indeed this pretty much sums up the experience for me too.. like a 'portal into 1969' (it was pretty cool to see those shots of Brad driving around 1969 LA and catching adverts for old movies & TV shows, and seeing the old cinemas billboards etc )

Quite a refreshing change to go see something like this as opposed to all the usual CG/action heavy superhero/MCU/star wars stuff that has ruled the cinematic roost for the past decade.

Also saw Ad Astra the previous week and that too was a welcome break from all the usual stuff (not that I go see all the MCU stuff all the time but it just seems that whenever I go to the cinema lately its for something like Avengers or SW etc)

Biggest issue was the over the top gore fest in the end. Sorry but why make a movie that tries to have a real feel to it and then throw in some high school level gore effects that were just over the top. When Cliff is bashing the one girls head into everything in the house it just looked way too much like he was bashing the head of a rag doll. And other little bits were also poorly done. It's as if he spends millions getting the sets to look real and then pisses it all away with cheap gore effects.

reply

It was over-the-top black humor. "The Hateful Eight" did the same thing; so did "Inglourious Basterds." Anyone who knows Tarantino flicks expects a little going in. It's integral to his style.

reply

I kind of think there's a cathartic methodology in some of Tarantino's work. Remember, these were kids that stabbed a pregnant woman to death, just slaughtered the hell out of her...along with several other people. These little holier-than-though monsters were wholly unrepentant throughout their trial and the subsequent trial of Charles Manson himself...I'm not sure there was much, if any, healing done the way it all played out, you know?

So the over-the-top violence...you're absolutely right about it being over-the-top, but there's a bit of catharsis in watching ziggy get her head bashed in until there's nothing left of it. The dog ripping into Tex's junk, that crazy knife-waving bitch getting torched...I think it was all very calculated to elicit that feeling of vengeance being served, even if in a fantasy setting.

Kind of the same with seeing Hitler and his goons being burned to death in that other movie I'm too lazy to look up right now.

Er Inglorious Basterds, as stated above =D
