Not awful but ultimately feels pointless (no real spoilers)

I admire QTs passion but I’m not sure he’s got much to say so he keeps stuffing movies with movie references, feet, and shocking violence. But frustrating this time because there’s almost no story to get into, just bits and parts.

Most of the bits aren’t necessarily awful or incompetent but about halfway thru it felt like QT didn’t really have anything to say so he’s repeating old tricks and self indulgence.

Leo was fine but Pitt (or maybe his character) was probably the best. Robbie only gets a moment or two but she’s fine. Great cinematography, etc but wish he’d actually tell a story.

Edit: I should give him credit for not also relying on another crutch: where every scene is essentially a negotiation with competing soliloquies.

Honestly you all are absolutely out of your minds. This movie is great. The best movie I have seen this year. The problem with moviegoers now is that they expect films to follow a formula where the viewer is more needs certain have certain plots points established. If they have to actively put it all together, they feel lost. This movie is more of what movies once were. Maybe that was the point of the movie. Younger people aren't going to get it, because the film deals with pop culture that is not on most of their radars and also the loose structure just isn't acceptable to most.

So if I don’t like it I’m automatically young, dumb and with a short attention span?

reply

No, but you have been conditioned to like movies that have a certain structure and formula. Or, maybe you just don't like it. Both are possible.

My exact thoughts while watching this picture. QT has nothing left to say.

It didn't even have his trademark witty dialog.

See you expect that from him and when he does something different, you reject it. If you want to watch the same thing over and over again, then just watch the same thing over and over again. QT has made an almost masterpiece with this film. I can't wait to see it again.

better than garbage superhero films

Nice review, completely agree with all your points!

Yet this is getting 92% fresh on RT and much of the media talking heads are tripping over themselves to heap praise on this clunker.

Sort of the equivalent of the king's court admiring the emperor's new clothes lol.
