Why did this flop at the box office?

I thought Wonder Woman 1984 was one of the more anticipated movies of the year and yet it did terrible in the domestic box office. What gives? Also does this mean "big movies" going forward into next year, won't do as good as we thought?

reply

There is probably quite limited screening due to covid-19, so it is released on streaming platforms at the same time, I don't know if the viewing numbers on streaming platforms are released.

It is probably still not good, but this is not a great movie, not sure can even be called a good movie.

Box office performance is going to be lacking, at least in theaters, due to coivd-19, but I think it will start to improve after mass vaccine release.

reply

It's beating the other Covid movies. I think that technically means it's doing well.

reply

Yes. I read that it was exceeding expectations - admittedly much lowered in this time of Covid.

reply

^^^

It had the best Covid domestic debut, But that can be contributed to opening at Christmas....

as for every other possible Box office, WW84 is a disastrous(not an exaggeration)

WW84 completely BOMBED overseas and only made 60% of what was predicted on OW and expected, It DIED during Its 2nd weekend overseas

WW84 absolutely was Dead On Arrival in China, It DIED in its 2nd weekend dropping 92%

WW84 Is currently at 90 Million total WW which isnt close to another film that happened during the pandemic Tenet

Tenet was able to make over 360Million World Wide during the pandemic.....WW84 is going to finish its entire run with less than 200 Million World Wide

so no WW84(a movie with a much larger appeal, bigger fan base, more marketing and was a sequel to an UBBER successful first film) isnt doing "Well" or "Beating" other Covid movies...

WW84 is a disaster.....

you can guarantee WB thought WW84s box office FLOOR was More Than Tenets 360 Million.....

WB had to be under the thinking "If Tenet Made 360 M during The Pandemic, WW84 can at least make more than that"

Instead WW84 is DOA everywhere

Its entirely possible WW84 wont even match Tenets domestic total despite opening higher....Tenet Made 57 Million domestically....WW84 is currently at 24 Million....

and to add the cherry on Top....

Its been reported Disney + and Soul completely Murdered HBO Max and WW84 on Christmas day resulting in Disney + getting 2.3 Million New Subscribers compared to HBO Maxs 544 K(Disney Netted Literally 4x as many New Subscribers)

Its also being reported WB is deeply disappointed in ONLY 544 K new Subscribers and instead was hoping for WW84 to bring in a much bigger numbers

So not only did WW84 FAIL at the box office, It also failed at streaming and failed to bring in the "desired" new subscribers WB so desperately needs considering HBO Max is going down in flames

for comparison, Disney+ and HBO Max both opened streaming services within a year of each other....

Disney + currently has over 87 Million subscribers, HBO Max has ......12 Million...lol

reply

Well those are some damning stats.

reply

I guess this movie re-affirmed that Marvel is the king of comic book movies, so Disney+ probably benefited from this.

reply

Marvel was good for a while, but every indication is that they're about to get woke and go broke.

reply

You seem to be getting off on talking about failing. I can't find any sources that suggest it is doing poorly.

I can help with that....Here...lol

You're an idiot. I don't give a s_t about Twitter and Rotten Tomatoes. I don't need 7 links about it flopping in CHINA, which is not the only country on the planet.

So Your going with The "I'm going to ignore ALL FACTS and DATA that unequivocally proves me wrong and that WW84 flopped"

lol in the words of Pepper, thats a "Bold Strategy, Let's see how it works out for you"

LOL

But seriously if you ever think of a real response to the overwhelming evidence I provided that WW84 flopped, I'll be glad to hear it...

but If your going to go with the shameful putting your fingers in your ears and whining "Nope dont care about anything, Facts and data dont matter, I'm right and EVERYONE else is wrong"...Dont bother replying back...

PS

Honestly on a scale from 1 to 10, How Dumb did you feel when you read my response?

Lol I mean you had to of done a "face palm" and sat at your computer for a few seconds in Shame realizing how much you set yourself up for that EPIC beatdown...

lol its not everyday that someone serves up a line like "I can't find any sources that suggest it is doing poorly."

and I already knew theres about a DOZEN websites/Sources reporting the movie is in fact doing poorly...

lol honestly you had of just felt SHAME, I mean it would have been bad enough If I simply replied with 1 or 2 sources...

But Hilariously you claim you cant find a single source reporting it is doing poorly and Then you get hit with EXACTLY what YOU Claimed you couldnt find by posting 7 sources(and I honestly could have posted more)...You had to have just sat at your computer thinking "Yep I fucked up, He got me"

Then you somehow you made it worse by sinking to the ALL TIME desperation move of SPITE Trolling by saying "Nope Dont care about FACTS or DATA, Dont care that Theres a ton of sources"

just an EPIC fail on your part

reply

Sorry for the delay. I just needed to let you know that how well or poorly this movie did in the BO is not of major importance to my life like it is in your sad little bubble. But again, I will state, doesn't look like this movie did "bad", or "flopped", which is a subjective term I guess. I don't really CARE, I care more about how moronic people who obsess over a movie's successes or failures are. This link suggests it did "ok". I'm not going to click your tons of links, even -I- have too much of a life for that.

Wonder Woman 1984 Box Office Numbers
Wonder Woman 1984 box office numbers were far from impressive. With a production budget of some $200 million, the movie took $46,530,051 domestically and grossed $119,559,196 worldwide at the box office.

The film played to 2,151 theatres in its opening weekend and took $16,701,957 (35.9% of total gross) – a fraction of what the 2017 film took.

Having ranked first in its opening weekend, WW84 held the top spot for a total of 3 weeks – with an average weekend domestic gross of $3,692,861 based on a 12.6 weeks average run per theatre.

Wonder Woman 1984 was released to a total of 32 countries internationally, with the main markets being China (with the largest opening of $18.8 million) with a lifetime gross of $25,500,000, Australia $19,204,042, Taiwan $8,900,000, Brazil $6,900,000, and Mexico $4,959,500.

It’s a Wrap
As speculated by The Hollywood Reporter, industry sources expected Wonder Woman 1984 to lose north of $100 million at the box office.

In reality, you can probably double that number.

Whilst financials are not available for the day-and-date launch on HBO Max – it is unlikely that they mitigated this loss to any large degree. In a move that was likely intended as a bid for new subscribers more than anything else.

A number of mid-range titles were being pushed off to streamers during the pandemic – which makes it somewhat surprising that WW84 got a theatrical release at all.

In any normal year, the numbers would be considered atrocious, and they were far from acceptable by normal industry standards.

Clearly, the pandemic took its toll on the Wonder Woman 1984 Box Office numbers – with theatre closers (only 35% of theaters were open) and stay-at-home orders – on what would otherwise have been a run-of-the-mill sequel release. The 2017 film grossed $100 million in its opening weekend – WW84 was never going to come close to that.

Loved the first one but this one really was bad. I hated it because it had a ton of WOKE crap in it. Lucky I had a free trial for HBO Max because I would have walked out of it

reply

Could it be that Disney appeals to a younger audience and a large part of it's growth is down to families buying in at Christmas? Presumably also they have an immense back catalogue and parental nostalgia contributes to this growth.
Possibly the current comic book franchises are not that important when competing for market share at this time of year?

reply

I went to it,but I can say I would have liked a real villian along with seeing the sheild and sword.

reply

I enjoyed this movie and give it a thumbs up. I'm surprised by how such a harmless movie can provoke such toxic reactions in people.

As a sequel, Wonder Woman 1984 went the fun, campy, and comedic route. It's not too different in direction from Superman II, which was the one where Superman fought the 3 Kryptonians. A problem that people who didn't like the movie seem to have is that there are places where the film asks you for a suspension of disbelief of a kind that you never saw in the first movie. For example, how can Steve Trevor possibly know how to fly a modern-day jet plane when previously he's only flown World War I style planes? For me, because of the light tone that the movie had established, this was never anything I got hung up on. It would be like objecting to the villains in Superman II as not being serious about taking over the earth because one of them is mentally challenged. Who cares? You look past that.

It's a fun and entertaining movie. Patty Jenkins did a good job.

reply

As a sequel, Wonder Woman 1984 went the fun, campy, and comedic route.

Not really. I think it went from the new comic book style movie to a old fashioned Disney princess style movie. The writer and director was not a comic book fan, I think that was one of the reasons.

Comic book characters are power symbols, In the end Diana did not win, not by power at least, but simply crying and begging the bad guy to stop.

That is it? You can imagine people are disappointed, I was at least.

It's a fun and entertaining movie. But the comic book movie fans want to see wonder woman kicking asses, and this is the wrong movie for them. This is the right movie for little girls.

reply

"toxic reactions"

Yes, because anyone who doesn't like a movie that you did is clearly toxic. *rolls eyes*

reply

The story was borderlined incoherent and there was almost no action despite it being a superhero movie.

Patty Jenkins didn't do a good job. Stop!

reply

I agree!

reply

Coronavirus.

reply

Of course it "flopped".

But that's a good thing.

reply

Have you tried reading any of the reviews? It's being mauled.

reply

The real question is, how could it possibly have succeeded at the box office?

reply

It originally was supposed to be released back in June 2020. But bc of the virus--the release kept getting pushed around. Finally so it would see the light of day they decided to release it.

By then I think that enough previews had been leaked online that the hype did not and could not measure up. And the pre-movie merchandise which had been put out in stores and was supposed to accompany the movie was already packed away. Bumpy marketing.

This is not necessarily the fault of the movie/script but it impacted the movie.

reply

They released it during the pandemic, they released it on HBO Max, and it was a bad movie. The only possible outcome here was for it to flop at the box office.

reply

It didn't have the greatest script to begin with. Wonder woman wasn't fighting the cheetah herself and then bad release plus bad marketing. So 'meh' If Jenkins is smart she'll hand over the reins to somebody else---if there is a third.

If there had been a decent script it could have survived bad marketing/release---those were nature induced. people just would have emailed their friends...etc about the movie in quarantine.
