low rt audience score? 😲

but the last few episodes on imdb have 9.0+

did people get triggered that white supremacists were the villains of the series

reply

I think it might have something to do with the show dumbing down one of the most interesting and complex graphic novels in history of the genre to a kindergarten level.

reply

Wow, this statement couldn't POSSIBLY be further from the truth, it is literally the opposite of the truth - the show is very complex.

This level of bias illustrates precisely why people are giving the show low marks.

Frankly, this is embarrassing.

reply

What a sad age we a living in if THIS is considered complex.

reply

This really says a lot more about you than about the show or its fans.

I'll end it here.

reply

If you think the show is more complex than the graphic novel, then you don't truly "get" the graphic novel. The graphic novel subverts typical expectations of morality. There aren't "good guys" and "bad guys" in the graphic novel, as superhero media are wont to depict. Watchmen the show goes back to the traditional good guy/bad guy trope therefore abolishing the core message of Watchmen the graphic novel.

reply

No, reread what I said. I never said that the show is more complex than the graphic novel. I merely disagreed with the point made above that it's at "kindergarten level", which really reflects that person's heavy biases and couldn't possibly be further from the truth.

reply

bad vs good is kindergarten level ;)

reply

?

That describes a lot of works. Doesn't mean they are all simple.

reply

Some of it's gotta be just grumpiness, right?

Like, I'm a big fan of the comic book, and I kinda think it shouldn't be touched. I knew that I wouldn't like watching the series, so I stayed away from it. But if somebody feels like me but watched it anyway, they might just get into a whole, "This ain't my Watchmen!" mentality and give it low ratings.

reply

Which is just stupid.

The show is masterfully done.

reply

Hating something to stand on some pre-judgement, some principal one has arbitrarily described, is indeed foolish behaviour.

reply

Maybe and pilot wasn't that good, but each episode got slightly better

reply

Well, I mean, I don't know; I haven't watched it (I'm not interested).

Isn't that the answer to your original question, though? Why is the RT audience score low while the latter episodes are rated highly? Well, I'd say if the first episode wasn't that good, the audience watched that, hopped online and went, "Flush it," and didn't watch any more.

Meanwhile, the IMDb score for later episodes and the critics (who have access to multiple episodes, I think...?) see what is good about the show.

As to your comment about the white supremacist villains, I'd say that there aren't enough white supremacists to be offended by that, however if the show is perceived as being "woke" there are plenty of people who will knee-jerk hate it, or hate it because it feels pedantic and preachy to them.

reply

i don't think the show is woke, but it seemingly said white people in middle America being racist is common. But since this is not supposed to be our reality , no reason to be upset.

reply

I wasn't commenting on what the show was or wasn't; I was careful to say, "...perceived as being 'woke'..."

I've seen a few things get branded as "woke" and then rejected by a certain section of the population. Now, if that's a false flag, it rarely translates into a poor showing for the material in question.

There's definitely a lot of racism still running around in America, quite virulently. I suspect that "our reality/their reality" doesn't enter into the heads of somebody who feels they are being tagged as evil by a TV show or film, even if that is a completely fair descriptor. After all, if you make the villains in your TV show white supremacists, you are making a commentary on that group, whether it is a metaphor, an alternate reality, or a documentary.

reply

There's definitely a lot of racism still running around in America, quite virulently.
Yes there is...the knockout game goes on.

reply

As someone who knew nothing about what Watchmen was I can see why this is the case. I watched a few episodes and it just didn't appeal to me. Feels like unless you were already a "Watchmen" fan then its hard to get in to the show.

reply

I agree, the show did not get any sag awards nominations either, so acting peers are not into the show either

reply

Its too bad because I love Damon Lindelof. Lost and The Leftovers are two of my favorite shows ever but Watchmen just doesn't do it for me.

reply

As a straight white guy, I'm getting sick of being told how racist I am, so yeah, the series was disappointing

reply

you felt personally attacked? interesting.

reply

Please, do elaborate...

reply

Well. . .

As a straight white woman, I wasn't offended by Glen Close's loony turn in Fatal Attraction. As a gay Samoan male, I wasn't particularly bent out of shape at being comic relief in Be Cool. As a proud transgender individual, I didn't get outraged by Zoltar, in Gatchaman.

See how that works?

The common complaint in discussions like these is that there is a Preponderance of movies where straight whites are villains. Which is absurd: (A) it's simply not true, and (B) It would be irrelevant if it were. And it's Not.

Are there a LOT of evil straight white men out there? Sure. Are there a *lot* of evil black teenagers? Without question. Are there horrific, racist Asians in the real world? Most assuredly. Should you extrapolate ridiculous conclusions from these depictions, and catch feels? Well, that's your option. . .but it's not at all reasonable. The witness is drawing conclusions from facts not in evidence. . .

reply

On a totally unrelated note, why do we never see black burglars in home security commercials? Black people can't get hired for those roles...

reply

As you say, unrelated. Pretty funny, tho. . .

reply

Never trust any audience ratings. They are easily brigaded. Have you heard of review bombing?

reply

Considering how this show handled race, the only ones who were triggered were those who made the show.

"wHiTeS aRe BaD, BlAcKs ArE GoOd" is apparently ok, but say the reverse and White liberals go ape-shit and act we should care about what they think and how they feel.

reply

IMDb has 65k votes for this, it can't be rigged. RT is easier and MC is trivial.
