article says that Walter committed mass murder in the last episode. this is totally different than how is saw it. It is not entirely clear in the article if the director confirms this or if it is just the authors take.

No, they weren't murdered. They were all juiced to forget.

Walter: "You should go now."
Jackie: "I'll will. I just know what it's like to wake up like that...alone." Indicates Audrey passed out behind her. Sits down to wait for Audrey to wake up.

Also, Geist's final conversation with Francine makes it pretty clear that she wasn't poisoned.
Francine: "This stuff really works, huh? How much time do I have?"
She then asks him for his hat to cover her face so that she doesn't burn in the sun while she's passed out. He hands it over with a chuckle.
She doesn't appear in pain or medical distress. Also, if she genuinely thought she was dying or that a mass murder was taking place, she would certainly have called someone from her cel, an office phone, etc.

That all said, it WOULD have been a shocker and much darker ending...

Walter and Leonard did not commit mass murder. All the evidence we see in that episode militates against that conclusion. The red liquid erases memory; it is not lethal. It causes people to pass out for a time and wake up without a memory. But they are not dead.

Walter and Leonard did not "Break Bad". They have not gone entirely crazy and deranged. Both of their natures appear to be good ones who are interested in doing good in the world and having a keen and decent moral sense. What could possibly motivate them to commit mass murder. Their motivation was to prevent this vile berry from become a mass-produced product that screws with humanity. Their action may have gone to far, but they were certainly motivated by the desire to avert greater harm to humanity. Even at the end, look at what Walter is reading in his file. He looks at the names of the other soldiers in the Homecoming program. One suspects his next mission in life is to seek them out and help them deal with the harm that was done to them.
