Renewed for Season 2

As of April 11th, 2019 Amazon has officially greenlighted a second season. We never know exactly how well shows perform on streaming platforms - but the speed or slowness of a renewal gives you a rough idea, and this was pretty fast!

Season 1 more or less followed the lead of the 2011 original film, although it diverged as it went along and ended in a different place. Now they'll be forging ahead into uncharted territory. So many directions they could go. I'll be interested to see where they take the story.

I thought season 1 dragged a little bit. I really liked the movie, so even though it veered from the original story I felt that too much time was spent with Sophie and her family.

I still enjoyed it, but I'm hoping season 2 trims the fat a bit.

Yeah, the part in the middle where she goes to visit Sophie is too long. In the movie, her family got dragged more directly into Hanna's situation. The idea of this girl who was raised in such isolation trying to understand how to live like a normal person was interesting, but they integrated it a little better. When you've got less than two hours (as opposed to seven hours plus) there's a limited amount of time for going off on tangents.

Material that seems like filler when it's all lumped together can be a lot more interesting when it's spaced out and really worked into the story - rather than seeming like a break from it. Season 2 won't have any source material to base itself on. No milestone events they need to include from the movie, which tie them down.

There's a lot of open questions and plot threads from the first season. What are the new Utrax recruits being prepared for? Did you notice how they were being taught US geography, the Declaration of Independence, etc.? I think their mission, whatever it is, is back home and not on foreign soil. And whatever some rogue black ops unit wants to do may not be a good thing for the average citizen. We saw at least two of the girls who look like they're ready to bail. But - just a hunch - I'm not sure they'll be like Hanna and her new friend/sister. More amoral, we can do what we want, take what we want, kill anyone who gets in our way and maybe live in their house for a while, a more crime spree kind of lifestyle once they're free.

We were joking a little that it has the potential to be a Dark Angel 2.0.

Oh my god, I was in college when that show was on! Haven't thought about it in years. If I remember right, it started off interesting but got predictable. Jessica Alba was the main reason to watch.

There are any number of directions they could go. Do they want it to be about Hanna and her new "sister" making a life for themselves while still being pursued by the government? Too much retreading old ground imo. Or do they want to go the route of Jason Bourne, matching wits with the agency that created them in an attempt to take them down?

Or maybe something closer to 24, a big global threat arises that she and the others like her are uniquely qualified to handle. They end up capturing Hanna and asking her to lead the other cadets in the field in exchange for her permanent freedom because, well ... she's the only one who can accompany them and point out that you don't go into a car rental place, knock the clerk unconscious, and steal the keys to a vehicle. You just hand him this little plastic card and he swipes it. Staying under the radar. It's a good thing.

Or maybe most of the other Utrax subjects are the threat, and somehow two (or four) have to find a way of stopping the rest. Actually I hope they do something totally different that we haven't seen before. Unique premises are hard to dream up. But worth the effort.
