"Midway" is Better than "Dunkirk"

Awesome battle scenes! Holy crap, Dick Best was a real pilot who really flew like that! Don't let edgelords criticize this movie, they do that to every patriotic American movie from Top Gun, to ID4, to Pearl Harbor. See Midway!

Yep, I enjoy carrier group battles with masses of ships and planes.

reply

I agree. I really enjoyed it.

reply

Me too, fantastic movie.

reply

I hope so, but doubtful

It is, and should have won awards.

Agreed. I truly appreciate Christopher Nolan's technical skills. But, I think he's a mostly dry filmmaker. It gets tough to be engaged to his movies, for the most part. We know that Emmerich goes too far, too often. But, he was very focused here, and that worked very well.

I liked both movies, but Dunkirk was the superior movie. The unrealistic SFX in Midway took me out of the movie from time-to-time, and Ed Skrein's over-the-top attempt at a New Jersey accent was also distracting.

If we're just talking about the flying scenes then I am the opposite. I felt Dunkirk had some of the most amazingly realistic WW2 scenes that I've ever seen in a movie. It was completely believable for me - the whole atmosphere they created. Midway was more like a video game to me. I liked Midway also, but I think Dunkirk did the flying stuff in a whole different class, for a different audience perhaps.

reply

Video game battle scenes you mean.

reply

Both average films but this was a fair bit worse than Dunkirk.

Both visually and technically.
