Couldn't they get English actors to play the English characters?

Well, there are countless aspiring British actors. I don't know why it would be hard to cast them for a film like this. Not like the actors they had were stellar. I'm guessing most, specially the common soldiers were Eastern Europeans by the way they spoke English.
