Within the first 5 minutes theres already a reference to all the racism of the time period even though it adds nothing to the story other than to remind us that white people are evil. Not surprised considering the director has done very left leaning movies before this.

shareI don’t think he’s saying anything different than when black people or women or asians or lawyers, or cops etc. see their demographic negatively portrayed. It rubs people the wrong way and I can accept that and not make it worse by being dismissive. I will say however, there is over-sensitivity to it right now. I’ve commented elsewhere that I felt this movie was very reasonable in not portraying any demographic as all good or all bad. IMHO it was exactly like you said. There were individual bad and good people. Tom Hank’s character was the hero after all and sacrificed nearly his life to protect a little girl who was an immigrant and a complete stranger to him. That’s a pretty admirable character. And the girl saved him and the Indians saved them both and a young white man saved them etc etc.
