Going to flop hard?

Despite good reviews, Tom Hanks, and a director with a good track record, there seems to be no hype or interest from audiences in this film at all.

reply

It’ll eventually find an audience.

reply

In theatres ?

reply

No probably on streaming/ rental services.

reply

Oh so a flop head

reply

A lot of theaters are closed in many places and even where they are open, some people are going to be reluctant to go see anything. I think the film would have done well at the box office if it wasn't for Covid.

reply

Tell Tennent that

reply

If you're implying that Tenet "did well," I can tell you that it did well enough that it scared off all the studios from releasing any further blockbusters to theaters. It was the litmus test for whether or not big films could be successful in the Covid-era box office and it failed, hence the fact that Wonder Woman, Bond and so forth were all either pushed back or removed from the 2020 slate entirely.

Yes, Tenet's haul would be great for a film like News of the World, but you have to consider the budget and genre. Even in the best of times a film like News of the World would only perform modestly at the box office. It's too artsy to attract a wide audience.

reply

I want to see it, but theaters here are closed. I will rent it when it comes out on demand.

reply

It just seems very unappealing. a grimy Western with unpleasant characters. So, I don't get what its appeal would be, in the first place.

reply

Both of the True Grit films were grimy and unpleasant.
Maybe you should watch Martha Stewart videos or some other fare where you won't be exposed to grimy and unpleasant characters.
Life should be free of grime and unpleasantness.

reply

To smelts’ point:
Shawshank Redemption was grimy and had unpleasant characters....and it may just be the best film ever made. In fact...MOST of the best films ever made were grimy and/or had unpleasant characters...

reply

Ha! Another easily-injured snowflake. :-) I said something that hurt your little feelings. Back to your crib and bottle.

reply

Hardly the case, and how you would conclude this says more about your own mind-set than mine.
The crib and bottle can stay in your domain.

reply

Easily injured. :-) So funny.

reply

My family went to see it the day after Christmas. Yes, there are several unpleasant characters, but Hanks's character is very likable, as is the girl (though she barely speaks).

It's only going to appeal to a fairly narrow audience, but if you like westerns as a rule, and you like Hanks, it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours. I doubt I will ever watch it a second time, but I'm glad I saw it once.

reply

Not to mention Tom Hanks exhaustion. The guy has been in enough movies. Tired of seeing his face.

reply

Western's don't tend to be very good anymore and I don't think many people have an interest in them so that won't help. I also feel like the trope of a man transporting a girl or child across dangerous territory has been done to death most recently in the Space Western series The Mandalorian.

reply

trope!

reply

It's interesting how the Western genre comes and goes - it was huge in the sixties, died out in the 1980s, made a huge comeback in the 1990s, and is now back to obscurity. I guess the same can be said for fantasy (swords and dragons) and space/sci-fi adventures.

reply

Western's need to be driven by a certain attitude which probably doesn't exist anymore. Same with fantasy stuff and Sci Fi.

reply

Are there even "hits" anymore?

reply

I'm beginning to wonder if Hanks still has it. I doubt this movie will perform well or find significant success during it's home video phase. Westerns are already pretty niche nowadays, and an Unforgiven, this does not seem to be.

reply

At this point in his career and life I doubt he even cares and either only does roles that personally interest him or takes on roles for the cash alone and phones it in.
