Question about Red/Adelaide's Voice

Sorry if this has been asked before I searched the other posts but couldn't find anything.
Why was real Adelaide's (Red) voice so croaky/hard to speak?
Was it because once she got stuck down there as kid she stopped talking so her vocals chords never developed further? Or is there another reason I am missing?

When they were kids, Red choked her and messed up her throat

It's implied by the film and I think stated explicitly by Lupita in interviews

You literally see her get strangled and then grab her throat once she wakes up.

You have the idea, I think. Not exercising her vocal chords for years upon years has left it guttural.

No, she was strangled by Adelaide when she was young, which affected her vocal chords.
