Marmee is terrible in this adaptation

My thoughts:

-In the book, Marmee is warm and loving and greatly admired by her daughters. In this mini-series she is a straight up biotch.

-Jo was bland and unlikable for the most part. Jo has conspicuous flaws in the book but is lovable and full of life. June Allyson and Winona Ryder were much better in their portrayals.

-This version lacks the warmth and sentiment from the book and other film adaptations. The bond between the sisters isn’t felt as strongly.

-When I first started the series, I was taken aback by how robotic the line delivery was. But it improved as the series went on.

Now for the good points:

-Laurie was so gorgeous and sensual. It was painful to see Jo turn him down lol.

-Kathryn Newton was a pretty good fit for Amy.

-Loved the score.

-We got to see the story play out more thoroughly compared to the shorter films. Less scenes were cut from the book.

Overall, I still greatly enjoyed this adaptation even though it’s not as good as the versions with Winona Ryder and June Allyson. I plan to watch all the LW adaptations eventually.

What are your thoughts and how do you think this measures against the other film adaptations?

reply

Yeah Emily Watson is awful as Marmee

Well I didn't like it. The two Senior stars (Gambon,Landsbury)) were barely in it. I wasn't happy with the audio or video. The W. Ryder film was very close to winning best picture and was not even comparable: much much better.
