Not even an Academy Award nomination?

Why?

reply

Has it had any kind of release? I'm aware of it because it's on in an art cinema in Cardiff but I don't think I've seen it in the main cinemas.

reply

Why would this matter? I thought quality of the film is judged, not how many theaters it's released to.

reply

Maybe. But if hardly anyone has seen it and there is no promotion behind it then it's never going to be considered. Having said that I don't believe it was eligible for the 2020 awards. Apparently ... films for consideration must have run for a minimum of seven consecutive days in a movie theater in Los Angeles County by Dec. 31
Whilst Mr Jones has been shown at several festivals I think it's only now going on general release - so maybe next year?

reply

Yeah, there are eligibility criteria. Otherwise I could make a crappy film on my phone and post it on Youtube and submit it the Academy for consideration.

reply

What's the eligibility criteria in regards to the matter of theater release? Even Netflix movies can be nominated but not limited release films?

reply

huwdj already answered this above. Streaming movies are eligible so long as they play for seven days in an LA cinema.

Here’s the list of films which were eligible for this year’s Oscars. I don’t think this film is on the list, so it must not have been given a qualifying run.

Limited release is fine. It just has to happen in LA County or NY City. And this has not happened with Mr. Jones. It is not set for US theatrical release until April 2020.

The Netflix movies that are getting nominated met the criteria of theatrical release first, before being put on Netflix. For instance, The Irishman actually had a limited release in the US in early November 2019, then got put on Netflix later in the month.

reply

Unfortunately, lots of good movies don't get nominations. The Academy is very fickle.

reply

I thought the movie was very good, and the story is very important. I thought it was odd to relegate the killing of Jones to post film text. That should have been shown, and would have provided a more dramatic (and still factually true) ending.

reply

Because it's shite?
