The only explanation I have is that the critics had a clear vision in their mind of what they wanted, and M. Night gave them something else. Or maybe the weight of expectations due to the hype set the bar unrealistically high for them.
Perhaps some of the critics who gave it a bad review will reevaluate the film later on and change their minds.
