Not fun, not funny, not enjoyable

The title says it all. The movie was a disappointment. When I saw the first trailer for it I thought it looked funny. As time went on and I saw the trailer again I realized that it probably wouldn't be very good. The focus on Akeem's son was just awful. They could've focused on the daughter, which is what I thought they were going to do. Unfortunately too much time is spent on the son and I wasn't really given any reason to care about that character. The character was boring and not funny.

I wouldn't recommend this movie. I'll give it a 2.5/5

That's a shame to hear. Out of curiosity, what was the best cameo?
[SPOILERS]

Was Eric La Salle in it?

reply

I haven't seen the movie yet so I don't know.

I only read a tweet that really made me laugh.
"I can't believe the Sol Glow guy wasn't in it"

reply

he was!

reply

The best cameo, in my opinion is the barking Dog Princess.

reply

I thought that was such a try hard joke. Like she's been barking for 30 years. High school humor.

reply

I feel sorry for you if you didn't think that was funny. Me and my brother thought that was the best part of the movie.

reply

It was stupid. It was like the joke in Dumb & Dumber To where Lloyd has been pretending to be catatonic for 20 years. Try hard as fuck.

reply

Eat a sandwich.

reply

Simplistic jokes for simplistic people.

reply

What's the weather like up there?

reply

What other comedies do you like? Just so I can avoid them.

reply

"Like she's been barking for 30 years"

yup , i liked the movie but that bit was stupid.
and they revisited it later at the end of the movie!

reply

There was a TON of great cameos. My favorites were Tevor Noah, Michael Blackson and Colin Jost.

No Eric La Salle. But there was also Morgan Freeman, Salt and Pepa, En Vogue, Gladys Knight, Rick Ross, Davido, John Legend, and a ton of characters by original actors from the first one.

reply

En Vogue and Salt n Pepa made me laugh, that was cute.

reply

Yeah, I thought the way the daughters were handled was a bit weird. I generally don't like when a movie introduces a character just to give them a minor arc and a few minutes of screentime. Its best to cut the character completely in that case.

The scene where the daughters act like the '3 Ninjas Kick Back' was especially awkward. If Eddie Murphy wants to make a female 3 Ninjas movie, he can do that, don't stick it in this film, it doesn't fit.

reply

My main problem with the movie is it almost felt like a musical. If you add up all the singing numbers, that's like 15 minutes of singing or something. Felt like they were trying to pad out a weak storyline.

reply

I like musicals, but it has to fit into the film and add something. This felt like musical numbers were just throw in to show off dance skills. It draws you out of the film instead of into it.

The Muppets (2011) is an example of a film I love where the music advances the story.

reply

Yeah, I know what you mean. The whole movie felt disjointed. It had some truly cool call backs but the movie as a whole was pointless. I felt sorry for Eddie Murphy.

As many problems as the new bill and Ted movie had at least it had a proper storyline, it ran circles round this movie.

reply

I actually do not like musicals, not that this is one, but I tend to lose interest as soon as there is singing and dancing. I loved most of the musical parts in this though because the music was either good music or funny....and not too long at once.

reply

Your rating doesn’t match your review. Sounds more like a 1.5/5.

reply

It's true. I was being generous with a 50% score which I felt was bad enough. 1.5/5 would've been fair though.

reply

How much of it takes place in America?

reply

Probably 5 minutes total lol. Pretty lame.

reply

Maybe instead of calling it "Coming 2 America", they could have called it "Staying in Africa".

reply

For reals. That was weird.

reply

Nothing like the original at all. A real stinker!

reply

Sounds about right. I didn't think the original was very funny either.
