Anyone else weirded out by the use of music in this?

Many times I felt that this movie was just a way for the director / whoever in charge to advertize his favorite songs. Starting off with the long opening credits being basically a full song, and then so many random songs were inserted in a lot of scenes, where in other movies there would just be a score, and this film was very excessive about it. It took me out of the moment many times.

I haven't seen the other two Guardians films in some time, but that's how they always seemed to me. Someone familiar with the comics told me that that's consistent with the main character listening to music on his Sony Walkman, but still, not my thing.

It is very understandable that it could take you out of the moment.

reply

Peter never had a Walkman in the comics. I'm sure he got one after the movie came out, but that was something invented for the movie.

I thought the opening song was a little long and a little too dreary.

reply

maybe that was the point? it was setting the tone for the Rocket back story.

reply

Oh it very much was. It went on for so long! And sure if you speak English it drives the message of the song home in relation to the character, but if you don't, it's meaningless

The music is one of my favorite parts of these movies…so, guess that’s how it goes.

reply

Agreed. 'Dog Days are Over' is a perfect ending song to the trilogy. James Gunn is a genius because in lesser capable hands with the wrong soundtrack these films could have been a disaster but he knocks out of the park with each one.

An example of little thought being put into a soundtrack is the 2016 Suicide Squad where the songs add nothing to the film.

reply

Was it the song they danced to? If so I thought is was horrible. The first song in the film was also awful.

OOH...MAYBE DON'T BE SO EAGER TO ADMIT TO HAVING TERRIBLE TASTE.

Right back at you, buddy. Music is subjective and because you enjoy it, doesn't mean everyone does. For me, Vol. 3 had the worst soundtrack.

reply

Same. I love the soundtracks of these movies.

reply

It does feel like several MTVs stitched together by star trek and an old style dystopian science fiction future.

reply

It's like the ran out of good ideas for music for this one.
The 1st movie was the best for that.

reply

Didn’t like the opening song, way too drawn out and long. It was weird they kept strumming the guitar after it as well.

reply

The music felt completely out of place in my opinion , but don't get me wrong i love all those old songs they played.

reply

Yeah, I have no issue with the songs they chose themselves, they are fine. But they broke immersion into the movie in a big way.

reply

It’s the reason GOTG movies are Vol I, I, and III.

This was my least favorite GOTG soundtrack, though. Probably bc I’m old.
