Disparity between critics and audiences

I haven't watched this yet, but note the disparity between critics and audiences:

I know the author of the book is a conservative and I suspect that's why the communists--I mean, critics--are giving it such a hard time.

Can anyone confirm?

reply

Wha? A conservative movie starring not one, but TWO females in the lead roles??

reply

Hey. . . It happens, bro. It happens.

But seriously, the author was on Fox News the other day. He said he thinks the backlash against the film is largely due to his political beliefs.

reply

Did you sit on a giant dildo? WTF is wrong with you?

A disparity between critics and audiences is not unusual, something that's been written about.

Critics have savaged quite a few of Howard's movies.

reply

I'd say it's not unheard of, but usually the numbers are closer than they are here.

reply

I suppose how one defines "disparity" here matters, but it's not uncommon to see a movie well-received by critics disliked by the audience and vice versa. I agree the difference between scores at RT is larger than you usually see, but only 750 users rated it there, a rather small sample. Over at IMDB it has a 6.6 score with over 9.6K user ratings.

reply

It's interesting that 750 users is a "small sample size" when the critics' reviews are always a fraction of that. Just goes to show what a pedestal the critics are put on.

I went ahead and watched it tonight and thought it was a solid 7.5! Good for Ron Howard. It was certainly more interesting than Solo!

reply

Whether 750 user ratings on a site can ever be representative of a general audience I don't know, but the RT and IMDB scores do differ. And critics certainly have their biases, many of which they no doubt share.

Glad you liked it. I know of the book and have heard its author interviewed a few times so maybe I'll have a look myself.

reply

"Can anyone confirm?"

I can confirm that it is a terrible movie.

reply

I went ahead and watched it and enjoyed. I can't imagine why anyone would call it "terrible."

reply

I have ni. But this apparently has become a big deal. So the winner here is Netflix.

reply

It really isn't that big of a deal. It is just one of the few movies that have been released this year and so many people are staying home..

reply

Right. But people are talking about it. And this isn't just some movie. It's based on a famed classic best selling book and directed by one of the highest grossing directors in the history of Cinema, Ron Howard.

So that's why it's a big deal.

reply

It isn't a famed classic best selling book and Ron Howard releases movies all the time that go ignored.

reply

Ron Howard is the 4th most successful director the planet.

This is getting reviews from the NYT and The Washington Post.

The film is probably receiving the most attention for Netflix since "The Irishman" turd or "Stranger Things" season #3.

And people are obviously talking about it.

You/Me/Internet

It is a famed classics best selling book.

Sadly, in this latter stage of his career Ron Howard is not getting the respect that he deserves.

Rush was a fucking great movie and is perhaps the best racing movie of all time. In the Heart of the Sea was an interesting film that at least deserved more credit than it got. And after watching Hillbilly Elegy last night, I can say the same thing about that one.

reply

Not surprised at all. I give ZERO credence to professional critics opinions. If I want to look movie reviews up I always look at user reviews. Professional critics always have an agenda.

Wise words. 👆
