From horror to tragedy

Finished this series just yesterday, and it absolutely blew me away. The characters are very complex and compelling. They're written in such a way that makes it hard to tell whether the things they're seeing are real, or if it's just mental illness which I thought was a very interesting take on this sort of subject matter. The cinematography (especially in episode 6) was phenomenal throughout as well as the color palette. As for the horror elements, it's quite a bit scarier in the first half of the season as opposed to the second half. The more you understand what's going on, the less scary it gets, but that's not to say the scares it offers aren't unsettling. There's a couple jump scares, but mostly it really is just unsettling things lurking in the background that make it scary. The way it plays out though, you realize it's more a show about tragedy and loss than it is about horror.

Overall I came for the horror, but I stayed for the resolution of these characters. If you're expecting a show that'll keep you covering your eyes, this isn't it, but it's still very compelling.
