What am I missing?

Let me preface this by saying that I enjoy non-mainstream, art house types of movies. Some of my favorite movies of all time fall into that category. So with all the buzz about "Parasite" and what a masterpiece it is, I was really excited to see it.

I finally watched it, and I'll say I found it mildly entertaining, but nowhere near the masterpiece people say it is. I mean right now, it is number #26 on the IMDB list of the greatest movies of ALL TIME. Are you kidding me? This is the 26th best movie of ALL TIME? I know the IMDB top 250 list is not the best gauge of great movies, but still, for so many people to rate it highly enough to get it to #26, I expected a lot more.

If you're shocked at that, look at it's rank on Letterboxd. Man, that site as gone down the drain the last few years.

reply

Yeah, I agree.

I watched it expecting my life to be changed (joking), but it was just a good movie. Nothing more, nothing less.

I gave it a 7 on IMDB

It doesn't deserve 26 and that will certainly fall once the hype wears off. I think you need to put the film into context - we are in a period of quite weak filmmaking where TV shows and streaming are in a tug of war with Hollywood, which itself has been afflicted with "woke" culture that is churning out mostly crap.

So "Parasite" feels like something a bit special in this context - it's a very well crafted traditional film, that goes that route of being subtle and open to interpretation instead of the "woke" way hollywood would have told this story (and thus destroyed it).

Also those themes of "classism" are very relevant to most people in today's increasingly stratified world.

9 months later, its #29, looks like its a keeper.

I think it is a really well-made movie with lots of hidden messages and full of parallelisms through images and scenes.

The director made a piece of art. Well acted and with a decent storyline and twist.

Best 26th movie of all time, no...

Remember that has just come out, it's an Oscar candidate,, and people tend to rank movies higher when they come out and have this type of hype. I'm sure it will come down the list in IMDb.

First time I watched was alright, but it got better on second viewing and after seeing a few videos analyzing it, which I saw a lot of things that I missed on the first viewing.

reply

Everything evidently. But you know, to each his own.

And let me say... you truly have a big issue with Parasite’s high ranking on good ol’ IMDb, eh? Heh... detractor please! First time complaining about the top 250 by any chance?

Cuz if not, then lol at still taking this (mostly) subjective list incredibly serious. And that list, by the way, continues to have Shawshank as number #1 (yes, that is something countless movie fans have complained about for years, including older movie fans who constantly take issue with new films that find their way into the top 250).

But relax... this film will eventually lose its place as the 26th BEST RATED film on IMDb’s *controversial* top 250. However no matter how much it goes down, the fact that tons of people (not only critics) thought this acclaimed film lived up to the hype won’t be changed.

You and a number of live-to-be-overly-critical movie fans on this board weren’t that impressed it, but the reality is many were. Simple as that.

reply

... they literally bought up the point that the list is only an IMDB list...

If anyone is overreacting it's you.

Meanwhile, City of God is still 21st and that's an even weaker film. Seems like people are giving these movies extra points for being foreign and "exotic".

Parasite is the film that fooled the world. A mediocre Hollywood-wannabe ripoff that somehow managed to make people think there's something brilliant there. Yet it's mostly superficial episodes, tonally off, and a tacked on heavy-handed message at the end. Years from now people will look back and say, what the hell were we thinking?

reply

Pretty bold prediction there.

reply

Pretty optimistic prediction here.

a mediocre film in a time period where hollywood churns out b-grade crap shines brightly. One eyed man is king in the land of the blind.

Shawshank Redemption is #1, what do you want? I think if you're gonna fix that list, you should start at the top.
