How did John David Washington get this role?

Besides being Denzel Washington's son. He doesn't have any star quality at all.

reply

What's next? Will you ask how did Jaden Smith get the role in After Earth?

reply

Jaden starred in trash though. This is a massively high profile movie with a lot of money riding on it.

reply

After Earth was a $130mil movie in 2013. Tenet was a $205mil movie in 2020. The movie might be trash but it was a blockbuster all right.

reply

Don't act stupid on purpose dude. Will Smith was in After Earth. Denzel isn't in Tenet.

reply

No u.

reply

His daddy is famous.

reply

Chris Nolan saw him in Black Klansman and was sold on using him as the protagonist.

reply

I would firmly disagree. He's very watchable and shines in this. IMO.

reply

Agreed, he did a great job!

reply

Effortlessly charismatic, a great talent in my opinion.

reply

The way he said "I might surprise you" in the restaurant was superbly cool and I usually rewind the scene just for that.

reply

Hollywood nepotism... One of the few high profile black actors who doesn't have a gangster rap aesthetic...

I think Nolan recognised the massive backlash he got from the media and Hollywood over Dunkirk not casting black actors or women in leading roles, so he decided to make up for it... Pretty slim pickings if you're thinking of actors in his age range for the lead, which at least some name recognition,...

Michael B. Jordan would have been better... Especially given the physicality of the role and charisma...

reply

Michael B. Jordan is another actor with zero charisma. He also looks like a little boy, he wouldn't suit this role at all.

reply

He was able to bulk up for Black Panther... Even more than he did for Creed.

For this type of character, you don't necessarily need charisma. It would be an added bonus, but Nolan, like Kubrik, doesn't always need to have his characters be more than archetypes... Especially for a movie like this.

I wonder who else they had considered for the role. Washington wasn't the best choice.

reply

They needed someone like a younger Matt Damon or maybe even Daniel Craig.

The role required someone savvy and capable of manipulating their understanding of quantum mechanics.

NOTHING in David Washington's performance indicated he understood a darn thing about inverse synchronicity or the quantum minutiae to manipulate to his advantage. It was way above his intellectual pay grade.

reply

Good question. He stinks as an actor. Zero charisma. He was pretty convincing in the fighting scenes though so maybe he's more suited to be a stunt man or action roles where he doesn't have to say much.

reply

Idris Elba could have done a better job

reply

Yeah! Elba is charismatic and can carry the movie well. John Washington is forgettable (I didn’t know his father is Denzel Washington and I’m a big fan of Denzel). I’d think the movie would have been more enjoyable with another actor in place.

reply

I could not disagree more. I had no idea who he was and I thought he was dazzling. And I didn’t even like this movie very much. I thought he was the best part of it.

reply

Same, I had no idea who the fuck he was until wiki-ing it later.
