some writing said there were 3 monsters in the area ...

so how can hear what is going on inside a house in the cellar unless they are right there at least in the yard?

reply

it's not explained because the plot was never developed past an initial sketchy concept.
no rules were ever established as to what noise attracts those things, and we are led to believe that a pin drop can be picked up from miles and miles away.

meh.

reply

I didn't like it myself ... in case that was not obvious ;-)

reply

but also why would the other 2 (?) creatures start running toward the house and the deadly noise that killed their buddy ..

there are just too many holes in this film to be enjoyable.
loll

reply

Because they can't see and they didn't know

reply

they heard a shitty sound that possibly could kill them.. and so they run toward it?
if you hear an explosion you'd run the other way and investigate later..

reply

That's true, but then they obviously arnt that bright and don't seem like the investigating type

reply

The noise is only dangerous from close range. Like dogs might hear a certain noise from half a mile away and bark, but it only becomes painful to them in the immediate vicinity. These things heard plenty of gunshots and explosions when they first attacked, they're not scared of those sounds.

According to creator John Krasinski they're sentient but pre-technological, so they don't understand science and gadgets. However they are highly intelligent and cunning predators.

reply

Don't get technology but got to earth from another planet somehow, assuming they were aliens, not seen it in a while.

There's a whole backstory, which they only briefly indicated in some of those news clippings on the basement wall. A small asteroid hit Mexico, and the creatures appeared right after that. According to Krasinski their homeworld was destroyed. Perhaps by a nearby supernova, perhaps swallowed by a black hole, either way some fragments were thrown clear and one eventually arrived in our solar system.

These creatures were subterranean in their original environment. They lived in deep cave networks, a few of which remained intact within the big rock they rode here. This is why they're blind and hunt with sound instead. Just like some animals on Earth that live in deep caves have no eyes.

Being so resilient they could not only survive low temperatures and high radiation levels but also the forces and heat of the impact. No surprise our weapons are mostly useless - unless you can pry open their armor and expose their soft insides.

reply

Oh ok, thats interesting i mist a lot. I'll have to give it another watch before I watch part 2.

reply

Only a couple of newspaper clippings were shown in the movie. I saw an interview with John Krasinski where he talked about this stuff, that's where most of that comes from. The sequel is supposed to delve more into it, and show flashbacks to the initial invasion.
