Emily Blunt barefoot and pregnant...

Quality actress...

Even in a horror movie she makes you feel more, the humanity, you can't help but connect... Solid actress...

Also, great to see a positive portrayal of motherhood, a woman who cares for and protects her family, which doesn't involve her being masculine, nor apologising for her role as mother, nor playing the victim of society or of men...

Not to oversell it, as it is ultimately just another horror movie and the rope is mostly being quiet and afraid of CGI, but Emily Blunt simply elevates everything she's in...

Her husband directed, co-wrote and starred alongside her in the movie, so clearly he's sending a message about their relationship.

reply

I didn't realise that, thanks!

It makes the movie a love letter to their family, as well as highlighting their very natural struggle and insecurity about being up to the task of raising kids...

Very nice

True, and I also appreciated the portrayal of the father. A loving protector of his wife and children. He taught his son how to be the kind of man this world needs.

reply

Exactly!
It's great to see a life affirming sentiment in a movie when characters are faced with an existential crisis.... It's a change from the usual nihilism and fatalism in so many movies these days...

reply

It was that aspect that stuck with me after viewing. More so than the horror.

Really enjoyed how they handled the family in the movie too. I think it added to the suspense because you knew how much they all needed each other and didn't want anyone else to die.

reply

Same. How the parents fear for the safety of the kid, how the father wants the son to follow in his footsteps, how the daughter feels something to prove because of her hearing disability. There is a great dynamic here between everybody.

Have a short review of the film here if anyone is interested-https://youtu.be/k42HUCd0zzM

I loved the portrayal of both the father and mother and completely agree with your statement. :)

reply

Me too. What's strange about some people's recent bandwagon perception of strong women is that to be strong you always have to be masculine and not feminine, not realizing that by doing so they're undermining women. And most of those people are women themselves. The reason why the strong women of Alien and The Terminator work is because they were still portrayed as realistic women, not over the top 110lbs women who can shove a 250lb guy like they were 5 year olds.

:) AGreed. Saw it today (Monday, 4/16/18) in the theatre..very good!

She looks really old for her age. She was born in the 1980s.

The actor looks like a tranny.

I didn't know they were married IRL. For some reason that pleases me.

I agree that they both gave solid performances in this. They've both been on my favorites list since I first saw them act.

I hate so many things about this movie and feel that as an audience we've been sold out when they could so easily have made a truly scary and plausible movie. But those things have been discussed elsewhere.

The point is that I fully enjoyed watching these two act, and I'm glad I got a chance to see them act together. I'd watch it again just for their performances. They can both sell their stuff.
