Some questions and thoughts (major spoilers)

!) Why didn't they move their main living area down into the soundproof room? Seems like they could've led more of a normal life down there.

2) You would think that the entire animal population would be wiped out, since animals make noise all the time in their normal lives.

3) He had a shotgun? Seriously? Why didn't he take it with him everywhere he went? Why take your exposed family into town without a weapon when you have one?

4) In such a dangerous environment, why would you let your youngest child walk thirty feet behind you?

5) The newspapers mentioned three of these creatures, but that was obviously local. Was the same thing happening all over the country? And where were the armed forces, with their heat-targeting jets and missiles?

6) Speaking of shotguns, these things could be killed by a single shotgun blast? Seriously? There's enough guns in this country to kill these things a thousand times over. Lots of folks would be happy to use these creatures for target practice. Just set up some amplifiers, get about a 100 rednecks with shotguns, and start playing 'Sweet Home Alabama' at full blast. The creatures wouldn't stand a chance.

7) In the same vein, there were other fires burning at night, letting us know there were other pockets of survivors. Why wouldn't they think of getting together and creating a plan to kill these creatures? Get some sticks of dynamite and put them next to a speaker in the basement of an abandoned house. Turn the speaker on and when the creatures show up, BOOM!

8) Why not run the town's fire siren all day?

9) It's weird enough that they had to put the baby in the box when it cried, but what were they planning on doing when it was older, say 1 to 4 years old when it couldn't be reasoned with to be quiet?

10) So the girl was basically responsible for both her brother and her father being killed. Why wouldn't she have made sure he didn't take the batteries, when she knew they were the real danger? (And why wouldn't the parents let him have the space shuttle without the batteries?) And the girl took too long to realize her hearing aid was scaring away the creatures. If she would've realized it sooner, like in the corn silo, her father would still be alive.

11) Why didn't he let his daughter go down into the basement?

That's all I've got for now. Despite all that, I enjoyed the movie. Very tense at times. The ending was too abrupt though, and denied the audience a really cool scene.

1) Seems like there are a few factors here.
a) they showed a scene where they were still working on it, it was recently finished
b) they weren't sure it would work...
c) you are trapped down there, so you cannot escape when one does get in... and one did..

2) Well fish are quite in the water and would be masked by rapids. I assume you are referring to the animals living in their house (I think they were raccoons?). Whatever it was it was probably a very quite animal that does hibernate in the winter... and just got lucky over 6 months? This may also be explained that for the first year or so of this alien attack the aliens may have been going after louder sounds, when there were more humans and larger animals. Because there were fewer humans now and less sound, smaller sounding animals would now be at higher risk.

3)
a) The shotgun would be a death sentence. As we saw in the final scene as soon as it is fired...they will swarm.
b) The creatures were armored and in most cases the shotgun I believe would have been ineffective. The hearing aid seems to have made their vitals vulnerable for a shotgun blast.

4) Indeed the Mom shows regret later in the movie that the child was not being carried. But also, the parents were preparing the kids to survive on their own. And really the kid is not much safer at home than they are out their in the open world. Really, anywhere in the world you make a sound it was going to end fatally. So what do you think is better, keep a kid locked up and bored all day(boredom leads to bad decisions)... or take them out and teach/coach them to live in this new world.

5) Military was likely over-run. There were newspaper reports meaning that the invasion/attack did take at least days? weeks? maybe even months? However we do not know really how many of these creatures there were and how quickly things escalated : sure there may have only been a few dozen in this rural area... but higher populated areas may have been hit with much larger numbers.
We saw a creature tear through a grain silo with ease, its possible that it wouldn't have much trouble going through modern military vehicles.

6) The only time we saw a shotgun be effective was when the creature was being hit with the high frequency sound. There is a note on the wall "armoured?". In a normal state these creatures are likely not vulnerable to shotguns or even heat seeking missiles?

7) When you bring people together you multiply the risk of conflict and/or noise. The larger the community, the more likely there will be noise and result in everyone's demise. These scenes with the light were really symbolic of people wanting to be together and forming communities but knowing that it would also be far to dangerous. A small hope of light.

8) The creatures destroyed anything that made sound, so if you turned on the fire siren it would only last 10 seconds.

9) I guess thats why they were making the sound proof room

10) so your question #10b question answers your question #10a: why the parents wouldn't let the kid have the shuttle without the batteries answers your first question. The daughter didn't see any danger of the space shuttle without batteries, but the parents understood that children are curious and the boy may someday find batteries and want to put them into the shuttle(too risky)... this happened rather quickly. Indeed, going back to your question 4.. you would expect one parent to lead and one to follow to prevent this kind of stuff... but I guess we can chalk that up to bad decisions be people under duress.

11) no ideas... yet!

1) It'd been over a year since the creatures appeared. They should've had enough time to finish the soundproof room. Even being underground would've allowed them to make more noise.

2) I meant all animals, not just the raccoons. Wasn't a question. Just pointing out the the animals would've been wiped out. Also, the creatures seemed to be at home in the water, so even the fish wouldn't be safe.

3) The creatures opened their mouths when listening for prey. That would be the perfect time to take the shot. Especially with a hollow point bullet right between the teeth.

4) There would be a difference between being able to partially relax with your family at home, amd out on an excursion to town, when every sense would be on high-alert. You would keep your kids between you at all times, not lagging behind.

5) A grain silo is made out of thin metal. Not even comparable to armor plate. Military could easily take these things out with a couple of Blackhawks.

7) I disagree. Bringing people together would be pooling resources to figure out a way to defeat the creatures. Better than sitting vulnerable and being picked off one by one.

8) They could fortify where the siren was. Or just set it up so that it goes off for a second or two at random intervals. Just keep the creatures occupied.

9) The girl was smart enough to cut the wires and disable the sound with the batteries in. They could've done that, or even removed the speaker, and given the kid the toy. The dad was obviously smart enough to take it apart and silence it.

1) I think construction without making noise would take much longer, especially since they also had to do everything else to survive (gather supplies food etc). Also we don't know how long they were actually making the room for.

2) well it seems that all the animals were in the process of being wiped out, exception may be aqua life but we really have little info on this. Yes they may have been at home in the water, but unless they are in the water they probably don't hear the fish.

3) Again we don't really know how vulnerable these creatures are without the help of the hearing aid It's possible when they are not being bombarded with the hearing aid sound that they are fast enough to hide in their armor between the time the a trigger is pulled and the bullet reaches.

4) Not disagreeing that parents seemed reckless here. But lets also consider the fact that this now normal life, can you really be on high alert 24/7, 7 days a week. There was really little difference in danger being outside in the town and at home. It seems a simple sneeze or stumble may mean death...

5) Not saying a grain silo is comparable to armor plate, and infact we saw that the creature did have trouble even with an old pickup truck (but it may have been just testing the defenses). We really really don't know how modern military weapons would have stacked against these creatures and we don't know how many of the creatures there were during the main invasion:
a) its possible there were 10 billion of these things... blackhawks are no good when the air bases are destroyed and cannot refuel/resupply/rest pilots. And if the whole world got wiped out we must assume there were infact many... the question is how many.
b) its possible that without the hearing aid attack, these things can withstand missile strikes?

7) Not sure what you disagree with... more people does equal more noise. In terms of defeating the enemy, they may be unbeatable...? Yes we saw them kill one... what if there are 10Billion

reply

8) the large the noise the more that come, the more they will hunt that area. Fortify with what? we are not sure what material these guys can or can't break though.... Not sure what the purpose is of attracting more of them.

9) The dad didn't want his kid to have a toy that was designed to simulate flying... what if the kids wants to throw it to see it will fly. The toy was too risky and the dad saw this as too risky so he made his choice.

Look how dangerous monopoly is... imagine a rocket ship!

Well the girl wasn't smart enough to make sure he didn't take the batters... and neither were the parents.

I like your refutations here, just seems like them only being vulnerable to high frequency seems unlikely. Yes, they might be armored, but we see very frequently they expose their fleshy membranes and orifices throughout the movie. Armor is a hard exterior not a forcefield that melts away due to a little intercom feedback, lol.

Another question:

12) Where did all the water come from that flooded the soundproof room? Did I miss something?

reply

12) I was confused on this as well at the time. I assume when the creature was looking for the sources of sound he cut through a water providing pipe that was probably supplying the house... maybe on the second floor?

reply

1) No one was sure if the supplies they had for soundproofing would work.
2) Animals: I didn’t see any dogs, cats or cows around anywhere, only the wild animals that came out of the forest around the farm.
3) The father would have known what farm families were still around and felt reasonably safe, these trips were teaching experiments and dad was trying to empower the children. A shotgun would only work on these creatures when the hearing aid frequency was working, it looked like this messed with their hearing and slowed them down. Normally they moved too rapidly to even get an aim on them.
4) Can’t answer this one! The parents obviously haven’t read any David Paulides Missing411 books.
5) It was obvious, the creatures were thinking hybrids, mechanical with exceptional speed but that huge ear in their upper torso that moved like an old woofer speaker was human in origin. These creatures were designed to wipe out mammals. They came from the sky in an invasion made from superior technology.
6) You could barely follow these creatures with the human eye, not alone get a bullseye on one.
7) The operating survival strategy here was to NOT draw attention to your family nest or den. You may want to ytube “shark frenzy”.
8) See answer #7
9) It is difficult to build your doomsday bunker while trying to be silent. They were tackling one problem at a time and making sure the baby would stay alive was their priority for the moment.
10) She was just still a little girl who couldn’t hear.
11) The father had previously gave the daughter another hearing aid that proved unsuccessful and the girl feeling guilt about her brother was not in the mood to try anymore. The father didn’t want her to see his work on the aids or the cameras he used to watch for the safety of his family. He wanted the kids to live as normal as possible and be empowered.

3) The creatures only moved rapidly when they were hearing a sound and bearing down on their prey. But other times they were shown moving slowly and cautiously, trying to hear sounds. At that time, their mouths and ears were open. They would be an easy target at that time.
5) I saw no evidence of a superior technology. They had no devices or instruments. They seemed to be akin to feral animals.
6) Same point as above. When it was moving around in the house, it was extremely slow. They could turn off the music when the creatures showed up, and they'd be walking around slowly trying to figure out what it was. BLAM!
7) No need to draw them to your nest. As I said, pick an abandoned house and place the trap there. Pack enough dynamite and they aren't going to survive it.
11) Interesting theory, but that wasn't explained very well in the movie.

reply

11--I could be wrong, but I assumed the reason the father wouldn't let the girl into the basement was because her hearing aid would interfere with all his equipment. Not because he didn't want her to see all the stuff. Hence, a somewhat foreshadowing of the ending.

reply

Yes, this is the best explanation so far and makes much more sense. Thanks.

reply

If that was the case, they should have explained it to the audience. Just have the dad explain it to her in sign language.

reply

Nah; when he was arguing w/her about why she couldn't go down there it was clear that wasn't the reason. She got mad & said, "I'm not a child." Other stuff going on. Really wanted to like the movie, but there are a LOT of holes in it. Ah well

reply

13) What was the purpose of the creatures' kills? They obviously weren't eating what they were killing. Was it to stop the noise? If so, why would they be attracted to sound?

reply

I like your alternative nest with explosives idea. I thought I saw invasion from the air/space headlines on the father’s workbench area. I thought the creatures may have needed mammalian blood to feed their biological component. Again, that pounding ear really looked human of sorts. I thought when the boy was in the cornfield by himself that something or someone grabbed him and pulled him into the corn to protect him. I was surprised when later he was found OK by himself. I thought the film kind of played with our heads a little.
