I wasn't quite able to tell, did they get away with the money or did it burn up with the hotel and the negatives?

I haven't seen it since it was in theaters but I remember they do get it and Dock O'Kelly gives it to Darlene.

That's what I thought--so why is Darlene still playing her lounge gig in Reno that she was detesting so much, the one the big shot was telling her in the flashback that she'd have to resort to doing if she was broke?

I think it was a big eff you to Buddy Sunday trying to dictate her life by saying that he was her only ticket to happiness and that singing in Reno would be low class. Also, remember when she and Dock were talking in the lounge she said "Singing is singing..."
