this will bomb

marvel now has a monopoly on the genre, fox cant compete due to poor quality, any marvel movie is better than an xmen movie. SOPHIE TURNER CANT CARRY A MOVIE ON HER OWN. GOT is an ensemble show, all of emilia clarkes projects failed too.

reply

I agree with your OP but disagree with your evidence. There are a few XMEN movies better than a lot of MCU movies like the first two Thor movies; the Iron Man sequels; and of course, Ant-Man. As for Emilia Clarke, two of her films were box office hits (Terminator: Genisys and Me Before You).

reply

terminator genisys was a bomb, me before you is a rom com, big budget productions are hard to carry.

reply

I think it's even harder for a rom com to do well these days because everyone only wants to see superhero movies anymore. But if I recall correctly, Me Before You was a serious movie about taking care of a loved one with an illness and not an actual romantic comedy, which is even harder to sell. So it's good if that movie did well.

reply

Meh. I enjoy the X-Men movies, warts and all, more than the MCU stuff.

reply

you are in the minority

reply

Do you like the original X-men or the new group better?

reply

I would cherry-pick elements of both. I think Fassbender is a fantastic Erik/Magneto.

reply

X Men 2 was rad.

reply

The best of the franchise imo. Days of Future Past is a close second, then first class.

I can't believe what a turkey this movie looks like. Even by X-Men standards. It will definitely bomb. It could maybe be forgiven if it was building toward something more. But the fact that everybody knows the book is closed on this movie verse, it will only draw the most ardent of hardcore fans.

Your reasoning doesn't really make much sense. Chris Nolan announced the Batman reboot a year before The Dark Knight Rises released, which made a billion dollars. The general audience doesn’t know or care about that stuff. All they want is an entertaining movie and nothing more. Especially, children who love superhero movies. Do you honestly believe five year olds who saw the trailer play in front of Endgame knows about what goes on behind the scenes of the film?

reply

I disagree. I think MCU changed all that. People want the next chapter in their superhero super story now. I don't think people are capable of enjoying single films any longer. An entire generation of kids is being raised to expect nothing less. I was talking with some young kids the other day annoyed that the Friday the 13th series wasn't very good. I explained to them that they used to just crank out shitty sequels to make money and nobody cared about ongoing stories and they didn't even know what I was talking about.

Part of the marketing of TDKR was the epic conclusion of the trilogy. It wasn't released as just another Batman adventure.

reply

Movies like that have existed for decades. The original Star Wars trilogy, Lord of The Rings, and the Harry Potter series. It’s not even new to superhero films with the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films having an overarching storyline with Harry Osborne.

Dark Phoenix has also started some similar marketing.

think it was just the Superman reboot that was announced in 2010/11 before TDKR was released,.. there was even talk of Bale reprising his role as batman in the very early stages of BvS (2014ish)

YOU look like a turkey! Nyaah! 😝

reply

Hey fella, you're a turkey! You know that?

reply

I honestly didn't know that about this movie until I logged in and read your comment. I wasn't following the specific details of this movie.

There's a good chance it'll fail because of its budget. Apocalypse probably made some profit but not much due to its $178 million budget. Rumor has it this one is $200 mil.

Problem is the foreign markets are so hard to pinpoint. Venom did close to $850 mil with nearly a $100 million budget. Ant-Man and the Wasp only made about $623 million. And Aquaman and Captain Marvel completely crushed it at the box office.

But a $200 million budget is scary for this franchise. Its staring directly in the eyes of the red.

Its apparently the third of the most anticipated foreign films in China. Between Captain Marvel and Alita.

reply

Not sure that tells a whole lot. Alita being 4th didn't take it out of the red.

reply

Foreign film studios can only take home 25 percent if the profit. So it will have to make at least 4 times its budget to break even. So 800 million total.

reply

Nah its not 25%. But your $800 million figure probably isn't that far off. China and a couple others are estimated to be 25% but domestic is 40-50%. I would argue most overseas markets are in the 30-35% range. Can't really tell because each studio has their own deals with foreign markets. But then there's also the marketing budget for a movie. Dark Phoenix could easily have more than $50 million of marketing on top of its $200 million budget.

What I do is combine the production budget and tack on another $50 million for advertising if its a big budget movie and then divide the whole worldwide number by three. So Dark Phoenix probably does need around $750 million to break even. Thats not counting the ancillary market (dvd, ppv) which is where a lot of movies secretly make their money back.

reply

Days of Future Past brought even with 740 million.
