prepare for disappointment

hope for the best

ala "The Mist"

I have enjoyed Stephen King adaptations by and large.

I just watched Storm of the Century for the first time about a year ago and fucking loved it. The Shining of course is great. I liked The Mist, both the movie and the much-derided TV series. Rose Red was worth at least one watch. Silver Bullet was pretty good. Stand By Me was excellent. And so on and so forth.

My understanding is that this isn't an adaptation of any specific work of his, but is set in his fictional world of Castle Rock, and that's enough to give me hope that it will be pretty good.

Most of the movies you mentioned, and many more are excellent. Christine, Cujo, The Stand, etc. But those films were made a long time ago.

The Mist TV show was a big disappointment, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this show take a similar PC social commentary direction that seems to infect so many productions these days. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

reply

I think at first there SEEMED to be some weird social commentary stuff in The Mist, but remember
that it was the gay kid who turned out to be the rapist.
That actually seemed like kind of a bold step to me. I ended up liking the show and thinking it was better than it was given credit for.

As for other recent King adaptations, IT was pretty good and I didn't mind the 2013 Carrie adaptation. I've also heard good things about 11.22.63.

I take your point though. Most of the best stuff is at least a decade old.

There's some reason for that. Stephen King shines when it comes to portray human beings. Specially, the dark side of common human beings. That requires an open-minded approach... which happened in 70s-90s. Last two decades, Hollywood has become more and more puritan and moral-ruled, and every movie is supposed to follow the political agenda.

It's not by chance that the last great Stephen King's movie, The Myst, was made by a rogue director who can't get a job anymore no matter he's one of the best directors right now hands down.

Try Gerald's Game and 1922 on Netflix. Both came out just this past year.
Try Big Driver, 2014
A good Marriage, also 2014
11/22/63, (movie from 2016) didn't exactly follow the book faithfully, it was a damned fine adaptation.
My point? Not all made that long ago. Some may disappoint, but there are some good ones in that mix.

I saw A Good Marriage show up on Netflix, is it worth a watch?
I'm not familiar with the story, but I like Joan Allen as an actress.

I'm still hoping to see Castle Rock one day, fingers crossed!

I liked A Good Marriage. I read the story first, so I was excited to see that it was adapted to the screen. I liked the casting of Joan Allen as Marcy, but I found the casting of Anthony La Paglia as Bob little strange since Bob Anderson was suppose to be a nondescript, ordinary American guy. Anthony LaPaglia? I keep seeing Daphne's drunken brother on Frasier! LOL!
I still say watch it! It's a pretty good story with a nice little twist.

reply

Thanks Margo. I'll give it a go.
Oh my I loved Frasier, I wish they made something like it now.
Although Grace and Frankie on Netflix is by far the best sitcom I've seen for a while. Have you watched it?

I tried to read Rose Madder recently by the way but honestly that husband, I had to put it to one side!

Let me know what you think of it.

Grace and Frankie... My sister was just telling me about it not long ago. I see it on there, but I keep passing it up for some reason. She was telling me how funny it is. I see that Martin Sheen is in it too. I think I will check it out.

I only read Rose Madder once when it first came out. Ridiculous ending. Full of crazy nonsense. Glad I didn't buy the book. I checked it out of the library and gladly took it back. Not King's best work.

reply

Martin Sheen is a joy to watch in it, a real revelation actually. I also really enjoy Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda and the other guy whose name escapes me!

I should post this on their board really!

I think I'll follow you over there. i just saw the first two episodes. Can't believe I have been passing this by for so long.
I have to see if there are more fans here at MovieChat!

Dazed, Did you ever watch A Good Marriage? If so, what did you think?

reply

Hi Margo,
I haven't got round to it yet.
We've been watching the Star Trek movies 1-6 on the weekends and Marple during the week. I'll get to it though!

I'm a little more optimistic since it's not going to regular network like The Mist and Under the Dome. I just have low expectations from network...They're so afraid of failing that they homogenize most everything and water everything down by stereotyping and cliches.

Hulu has hit a home run with The Handmaids Tale (and 11-23-64 was pretty good too) and probably would like to keep the momentum going..So I'm hopeful...
This is a little different, too, since it's not going from source material but referencing many sources of Kings...Could be good. In other words they have at least used some creativity ..

I've been disappointed by lots of films and series lately so I would like this to work.

I'm with you on that, I've started many but rarely make it past the third episode. Not sure why.

reply

So far so good I would say. The setup has been very intruiging and the actors all top notch. I sustpect the story will slow down if it's stretched over multiple episodes so I hope they dont do that and stick to a good pace.

reply

i think it's pretty darn good!

reply

So far so good. Me too got an impression that Winchester Bros might show up at some point and ruin it.

reply

IMDb rating of 8.9 based on first 3 eps.

reply

For now I am cautiously optimistic.

Hope this series won't insult the viewers' intelligence.
