So we now know it's 1999?

They always say "1990 something" to keep it ambiguous, but they just went to see "The Phantom Menace", which means it's close to the end of the school year, 1999. That just destroyed the whole premise of a 90s show.

That’s very clean assed

yeah, they kind of screwed up by choosing a film that came out at the end of the 90s. So doesn't this place Schooled about 10 years in the future of The Goldbergs? (Lainey, Erica, Johnny Atkins, and Evy - nice that they remembered to include her in there, though she kinda disappeared after Erica stole Geoff from her - all attended their high school reunion, probably their 10th) In which case, Lainey and the other teachers whom we know from the Goldbergs (Coach Mellor, Glascott, etc), don't look 10 years older on the spin-off.

reply

I'm guessing some people do not watch "The Goldbergs". They can have something in 1989 take place in 1980. Same with "Schooled"; time can jump all over the place.

This should have been pretty obvious in the second episode "Lainey's All That". The movie they referenced came out in 1999 ("She's All That").

So not surprising at all that they're basically following the original show's format.

reply

incorrect. they jumped all over the place during the goldbergs in terms of the timeline. lots of anachronistic references, but that worked fine. you have double standards if you think schooled breaches these pre-determined rules.

reply

Double standards? Maybe you need to look that term up. The meaning clearly escapes you. The show cemented itself into a specific moment in time. Period. You're a smart one, aren't you?

reply

Oh, I looked it up - but only for your benefit, the first definition to come up when Googled:

"Double standard
A double standard is the application of different sets of principles for situations that are, in principle, the same, and is often used to describe freedom that is given to one party over another. A double-standard arises when two or more people, circumstances, or events are treated differently even though they should be treated the same way."

I know what a double standard is, if that makes me a "smart one" then so be it - clearly smarter than you. So to clarify, again for your benefit only; if you are happy with The Goldbergs definition of "the 80's" where they jump all over the decade and reference different events and crazes without applying a linear timeline, then you have to apply that same benefit of the doubt to Schooled, where they do exactly the same thing. If you can't my friend, you have what is commonly referred to as a DOUBLE STANDARD.

You're welcome.

reply

No, you're not a "smart one". You've proven that by completely missing the sarcasm. Worse, you still don't comprehend a double standard, even after looking up the definition. Let me break it down for you "smart one".... I can't be accused of having double standards, when I spoke of a singularity, in relation to nothing else. I don't watch The Goldbergs, moron. Even if I did, I made no comparison, or mention of it.

You're assuming I'd find a certain behavior acceptable in one show and not another. You know what they say about assuming, and yes, you made a complete ass of yourself. Again.....MORON.

Yeah, they jump around quite a bit. Another error was in the season opener of season 2 in which she says her and Barry saw Dangerous Minds, which was summer 1995, during the summer but then during the school year the kids are going to see American Pie, which not only came out in 1999, but also in the middle of the summer of that year and no where near school months.

Those aren’t errors....they don’t care about specific chronology...it’s purposeful.....it’s more of just a general fantasy of growing up in the 80s (Goldbergs) or becoming an adult in the 90s (Schooled) and not tethered to any straightforward timeline.

WELL PUT.

The Goldbergs do the same thing with the 1980s. There's one episode where they watch the fall of the Berlin Wall on TV (1989). Another episode where they watch the 1981 wedding of Charles And Diana. In one episode they go to the cinema to see Return Of The Jedi. (1983). Also another one when they went to see Willow. (1988) Another one when they see E.T. in the cinema. (1982)

The rules are that because it's set in "1980-something", they don't have to worry about what year something happened in when they reference it.

Schooled follows the same rules, but in the 1990s.
