What was this actually about?

Call me dumb, but my impression after finishing the series was that it was absolutely pointless and gratuitous. A bunch of stuff happens, but no overall meaning, lesson, or even theme can be derived. It seemed to be going somewhere for the first half of the series - I thought it was attempting to line up a series of sociopaths on a conflicting course that would result in... something. But it resulted in nothing.

Or am I looking at puddle of puke trying to find meaning in it?

I think you're not wrong.

There may be meaning behind the subtext—dissolution of moral values, absence of spiritual development, duality of man, as well as certain mystical ideals, such as karma—that sadly falls flat because of the pretentious delivery, perhaps unintended.

A potentially interesting watch for the visuals and occasional score, but devoid of any effective take-home lesson.

Yeah this is typical of Nicolas Winding Refn, all style no substance. Beautifully shot films with nothing to say.
