This show is not necessarily about us feeling sorry for them. It is about women who are in a situation and decisions they make good or bad to get out of them. Everyone is so critical and serious all of the time. The acting in the show is fantastic, the writing is also good. There are characters I love to hate and one's that I love. I hate when the show ends.
I do too. I believe it is the point. I do not believe in turning to the life of crime but I can see how it can happen. Specifically for Retta's character Ruby. To have a sick child like that, in a heart beat.
For me, the characters are obviously not completely realistic, and that's where people seem to have a problem with them. But they're exaggerated versions of real people with real problems, as are most main characters in comedy shows. One of my favourite sitcoms of all time, Parks & Recreation, does this with every single main character, of which it has more than five.
And I find all three of them relatable - the housewife who has to ask her cheating husband for money to do anything even though he's blowing their savings on a mistress; the checkout chick who can't step up in life because she had a kid young and is stepped on by her misogynistic boss; and definitely the mother with the sick child and the seemingly perfect husband. I think having a husband who can do no wrong is just as pressure-inducing as having a sick kid when you're frustrated with your life.
