No, in an interview he was asked if he chose to leave the show and he said he didn't, the writers just chose to kill him off for the story. Infact he said there was alot more he wanted to do with the Melendez character and he thought it was a bit soon to write him off the show and it left alot of stuff with him up in the air.

shareI hated it too, it just felt so sudden after spending 3 seasons with him to just suddenly in the middle of one episode tell the audience "Oh btw yeah he's dying", it just felt so out of the blue, i just didn't understand why he needed to die.
Not to mention they had been building his relationship with Clair up for half the season and we got no conclusion with it. they just rushed it up and had them both confess their love before he died to try and wrap it up.
I dunno to me it just feels like something happened behind the scenes that made the showrunners kill him off, cause imo it made no sense to kill him off while he was in the middle of a storyline and the show was getting a 4th season.
Maybe he was too demanding? Maybe he wanted too much money to continue and they couldn't afford him? Maybe the other actor's didn't like him? The possibilities are endless
