I want to like this show.

It's done by David Shore, the inventor of House, one of my all time faves, and Freddie Highmore does a good job.

Tonight's premier was not bad, but had some ridiculous moments, such as the board approving him without a second vote, after he gives his "my bunny went to heaven" speech. PUH-lease! Give me a break here.

Also they need to tone down the dramatic music. Way down. I could be wrong, but I don't remember Shore leaning on this crutch in House.

I'm also worried it could become, in the words of Critic Jerome Wetzel: "a formulaic, feel good Disney film (it is on ABC) about overcoming adversity, with the struggle simplified to a sugar-coated nutritionally-lacking, tasty, but unsatisfying snack."

Bottom Line: The beginning was a bit shaky, but perhaps it will get better. I will continue to watch for now.

"Fruitcake anyone?"

reply

Sorry did not see house… Did not remember the dramatic music. I was just interested in the story. The bunny was fine as a story. No i'm gving you a break.

reply

You didn't watch House? It's one of the best of all time. Hugh Laurie was magnificent in that. Brilliant and dramatic one moment, hilarious the next. You might want to check that out.

😎

"Could a 12 year old do this?"

reply

I second that - House is a great show.

reply

Amen!

😎

"If I were 12, could I do this?"

reply

no i haven't. i heard about it and that it was good. however, there comes a point where you have to prioritize what shows to start watching and what not to or you'll be sitting in front of a tv all day which i don't want to do. i have 2 jobs, 2 dogs and friends so i'd rather just watch a few recorded shows here and there. but, if i get the chance, and run out of tv shows to watch, i'll keep it in mind.

reply

Wow! You are a hard worker, evikeaz. You will go far. People like you are the backbone of this country, and are to be respected. I'm retired so I don't face the same dilemma. However, I DVR shows, and I do eliminate duds periodically. My time is precious.

I still don't know if I'm going to continue to watch this show. If it turns out like House, I will like it. However, if it becomes a saccharine feel good story about overcoming adversity, I will drop it like a hot rock. We shall see.

Just out of curiosity, what are your favorite shows?

😎

"I Am the FBI."

reply

i also get dvds from the library as ours is very up to date on tv shows/movies. the one that i just got from the library was season 10 of "the big bang theory". i waited until it came out at the library so i can watch it whenever. now i'm recording season 11. this show is probably the best, if not close to, the best writing, acting and just general funny stuff not to mention the little tidbits written at the end of each show episode by chuck lorre, i think. it's a riot and sheldon is a hoot!

i also do like friends and seinfeld.

reply

Definitely check out House. Great show!

reply

Highmore was definitely the best part of the show. The other actors, script, etc., weren't impressive.

reply

I agree.

😎

"Is this thing on?"

reply

Knowing that it was developed/created by David Shore is one of the reasons I decided to tune in, second was Freddie.

I was surprised after what he said, that one lady right away said, welcome to so and so hospital, but I guess it was good enough for her that he wanted to save lives and he already proved that he could.

I was more annoyed by whenever they were in that conference room I kept hearing like outside noise, like they were near a busy kitchen, what was that?

reply

That's one of the reasons I decided to check it out. I don't know what the outside noises were.

I think shows with autistic supermen, starting with Brent Spiner thirty years ago, have run their course. Worse in the case of this show, whose hype-ads were repeated so often, I begged the t.v. to shoot me. The Good Doctor posits a 1) brilliant; 2) good-looking; 3) white; 4) male as the face of autism, as t.v.-land has since Data the Android. And this does no help for real autistics. Real adult autistics have a very high suicide rate, not because they're not brilliant, but because despite their brilliance, the disability often precludes them either from seeking or maintaining highly-paid careers in STEM fields. (Fox Mulder in retrospect was a poor b*s*a*d.)

I haven't and won't watch this series, not until the government, society--whatever--starts paying attention to adult autists who unlike a "good doctor" have aged out of the concern of every frikkin' body except their anguished parents.

reply

I never watched Star Trek The Next Generation, so I did not know that character was autistic. I also never watched The X Files, so I don't know why Mulder was a bsad. By bsad, do you mean blind dumb and stupid? I googled it, and that's what
I came up with.

Also why do you mention that the main character is white? What difference does that make? No offense, but that sounds like racism to me.

😎

"I Am the FBI."

reply

Research "arrogant genius television" for a start if the subject interests you. Then you'll know what b*s*a*d stands for, too!

reply

No, I'm not particularly interested in this subject, but since you brought up bsad, I would like to know what it means to you. I'm funny that way. I like to be enlightened.

I could not find a web site with the title "Arrogant Genius Television". I did find some other web sites, but none of them explained what bsad is. I googled bsad and found "blind, dumb and stupid" and "Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression". How about giving me a break, and just letting me know what your meaning is?

"That bad, huh?"

reply

MovieManCin2:

It simply means "bastard"---Venn was just messing with you, lol.

reply

Oh I see now. Thanks for that.

😎

"I Am the FBI."

reply

BTW, have you ever watched Speechless?

😎

"Harry, you're all right."

reply

It looks like something I would purposefully avoid watching even a minute of.

I enjoyed Doogie Howser.... I thought House was very bland and OVERLY formulaic the two times I watched it and the many times I heard about it...

A combination of the two does not sound appealing.

=)

reply

I never watched Doogie Howser because it sounded like a dumb idea. House, on the other hand, is one of my favorite shows of all time. I realize that not everyone agrees with me on this. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla.

As to this show, if it turns out like House, I will probably love it. However if it turns into a bleeding heart story about this brave young lad overcoming adversity, I will drop it like a hot potato.

Just out of idle curiosity, what are your favorite shows?

😎

"The Owls are not what they seem."

reply

Older favorites would be Simpsons, Frasier, Northern Exposure, Dexter (first four seasons), and some others I can't think of offhand (I'm mostly a movie guy).

Modern favorites would be Rick & Morty, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Big Bang Theory, Community, People of Earth (though it's struggling with season 2), and I really liked the first season of Glow but I'm not sure if I could count it as a favorite.

Again, mostly a movie guy.

reply

Some interesting choices. I like Fraier, Northern Exposure, and The Big Bang Theory.

Frogarama:

HOUSE was the very opposite of bland and overly formulaic----for one, it had a lead character who was nothing like previous lead characters in medical shows---he was a doctor who was actually disabled for a change, was a blunt, outspoken pain in the a** most of the time, and acted like he didn't want to be bothered with people half the time, let alone his own patients. He was funny as heck, too,, even though he clearly had issues. The show wasn't your typical medical drama at all, which I think was part of the reason it went on for at least six or so seasons, I believe. That said, I'd like to check out this "Good Doctor" show, because there's also a Netflix show called Atypical, where the main character, a high school student,is also autistic.

Frankly, it would be nice to see a show about a person of color who's disabled or autistic,too---like a teen girl, for instance, that would be even more interesting, and it would be probably be suitable for Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu.

reply

The stuff with the doctor was great. Conflict with Chief of surgery was okay. The rest was poor. The hippy dippy girl doctor was annoying. The high strung boardroom guy was annoying. Actually everything about the boardroom was bad. If they don't drop the extraneous crap and focus on the doctor, this won't do well.

reply

I think you just hit the nail squarely on the head, lude.

"That bad, huh?"

Imagine if House had been board meetings with people arguing, we would have gotten more Stuart Little sequels.

reply

Ouch! That thought makes me cringe.

I don't hate him, though he is a bit weird.

Hmmm. Well that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.

indeed.

I want to like this show as well but the pilot didn't do much for me. Also, I just can't stand the lead. Perhaps, few more episodes and he will grow on me but at the moment a big no.

Agree with most of your comments too. So many stupid decision taken by people. For example, the parents of the child at the airport - why would they trust him to cut open their child. Also, why didn't the ambulance arrive or more importantly the medical staff at the airport itself? There were so many moments like this that it made the show less watchable for me.

reply

If you don't like the lead then you might as well hang it up. His performance is what raises it above the standard network fare.
Without Freddie Highmore the show is nothing beyond formulaic network tv...all the supporting characters and plot are pretty and appealing but not exactly awe inspiring. Bland mostly. Same old, same old familiar stuff..
ER did all the hospital stuff better and more cutting edge (the first 5-8 seasons anyway) 20 years ago.

Also, someone mentioned something about the lead being a "white guy" with autism as if that's such a bad thing..Ironically, with one exception, he is the only white guy in the show. The cast is very diverse ...so unless someone has a pc finger wedged up their butt there should be nothing wrong with a white guy on a tv show depicting autism.
Nor should there be a problem of depicting a successful person with autism. It wouldn't be worth a show if it were common.
