Woke movies that are actually good?

i quite enjoyed 'annihilation'. any other "woke" movies that are watchable?

reply

Captain Marvel wasn't bad. I enjoyed it well enough.

The problem with the "woke" crew is that they shoot themselves in the foot by ramping up the hostile, women-are-better-than-men (or alternatively: minorities-are-better-than-white-people) rhetoric instead of just making movies with female leads who are well-written.

Take a movie like A League of their Own for instance. It's a female-focused story whose major characters (except for Tom Hanks, who is in a supporting role) are women with initiative, but those women (and the story surrounding them) never come off as unnecessarily hostile or anti-man. Yes, it's a female empowerment story, but it's told in a reasonable way that makes viewers--both men and women--get behind the characters and want to see them succeed.

I'm not sure why today's Hollywood filmmakers can't just make films like that today, instead of the weird iconoclastic shit that they're repeatedly giving us.

ALofTO is a GREAT movie. I always watch it if its on TV.

Also, non-white people are only a "minority" in the United States. Globally they account for 92% of the Earth's population.

I just rewatched it probably six months ago and it really is great. The early 90s was a great time for film and delivered a lot of really good movies.

It's a shame that Geena Davis's career got severely injured because of the back-to-back failures of Cutthroat Island and The Long Kiss Goodnight. It's especially unfortunate since The Long Kiss Goodnight is a damn good action movie. If you like Geena Davis and haven't seen it, you should give it a look.

Re: non-white people only being a minority in the United States, well in fact it's true for most of the Western world, which is where all the "woke" movies are being made.

reply

And when they become a majority of the population of the United States, the quality of life in the United States will be that of 92% of the world's population. Radiation aside, Japan will remain quite livable, large sections of the Nordic countries outside of the cities will as well.

Just because it has women in it, doesn't mean it's "woke". The term implies a dose of ideology and politics. Looks like this is another one of these terms that become so widespread that they lose its meaning.

There are certain hallmarks of wokeness, and you know them when you see them. Dark Fate definitely features multiple fingerprints of the woke mindset.

Mermaid Down is extremely woke but surprisingly not a bad watch.

Doom Annihilation woke Doom but is almost in the so bad it's good category

Most of Neil Blomkamp's films are preachy left-wing politics (though not quite as bad as the SJW stuff as he isn't OBSESSED with positive "representation" of gays, Muslims, etc.) but his sci-fi films are still pretty entertaining. I thought 'Chappie' was a lot of fun, for example.

Not a movie, but one notable example that fits your criteria is the most "woke" episode of last season of Doctor Who was ironically one of the best episodes. The Rosa Parks episode was extremely preachy and really hit the audience over the head with "white people BAD!" and how much society has "evolved" since then, but the episode was fun, engaging, and very entertaining. They basically gave the historical events of Rosa Parks a "Back to the Future" type twist where they have to make sure she gets on the segregated bus at the exact time and place it originally happened so history can be restored. Most of the "female Doctor" stuff was boring and forgettable, so I found it weird that the most hard hitting SJW story was one of the best ones.

The vast majority of SJW moves are garbage, especially the ones that only exist to push an agenda, like John Q (preaching a "right" to socialized medicine), or The Danish Girl (preaching "support Transgender rights!!!")

Oh, I just remembered one I overlooked. Spike Lee's Blakkklansman movie is pretty good, though the SJW politics and "wokeness" of the movie hurts it, especially the forced tacked on ending screaming "ORANGE MAN BAD!!!" in case we didn't "get" it from the rest of the movie. Ironically Lee accidentally made a pro-police movie while trying to make an anti-Trump movie. Film would have been better if he had tried to be impartial and just tell the facts of Ron Stallworth's real life story, but for what we got, it's entertaining and has a number of really good scenes.

are jordan peele's movies considered woke?

reply

People bash his Twilight Zone series for being "woke", but I wouldn't consider his movies to be in that vein. He's certainly left-wing in ideology but one of the big twists in the movie Get Out is the "evil white people" in the movie turned out to be white LIBERALS and proud Obama supporters, rather than white conservative Trump fans.

Please share this with all the conservative whites who didn’t see this angle.

About half of the Star Trek movies are good

Blockers shoehorned pretty much every ethnicity and sexual orientation into the movie and I still thought it was good.
