I think most of these "banned in China" stuff is really just movie promotion. I read before China has regulations of foreign movie production companies can not take more than 25% of box office revenue, which is average, but US comic book movies routinely demand more than that. Some Hollywood studios are unwilling to accept that. I think that is why most Marvel films are not shown in China these days, but you often hear in mainstream media that those movies are banned in China.
I think using social media to create these fake narratives then mainstream media quoting them is one of the most common ways mainstream media deliver fake news these days.
