Very rare experience

Black Adam is a film BETTER than I was expecting.

Hollywood has been dishing out big budget duds all year so I had low expectations for this.

However it was very enjoyable.

Dwayne Johnson is solid gold and his supporting cast is strong.

The Henry Caville cameo rocks.

8/10.

lol

Henry Caville cameo lasted 2 seconds - for anyone interested, skip this crappy film and watch the cameo on youtube.

Frankly, I'm disappointed in rock - but i can also understand him. He's got the acting chops, but keeps starring in crappy, derivative films - he's as typecast as it gets (though his departure into the animated film voice acting was very welcome, as it allowed him to be more than this typecast, poorly written crap). This film most likely got Rock the most money - it's all about money at this stage.

Perhaps comic book movies aren't for you.

Commenting on movies isn't a strong point for you either.

I'm not sure he's got much of an acting range - but I may be wrong - perhaps when he's older there will suddenly be a role and everyone will turn around and say, 'gosh, he can actually act'. We've all seen this before.
But I think you're right - it's about the money. Which means holding true to the brand and controlling the product - I noticed his producer credit on Black Adam (= even more money?) and he seems to be a producer on most/all of his recent films. He is the apex predator of the big, physical but humorous niche at the moment and I imagine his strategy is to hold on to it as long as possible. And maybe the arty stuff will come later?

reply

I saw him really act in 'snitch' - that's when I first came to a realization that he's not just a one trick pony. Unfortunately.... he reverted back to his tricks ever since. I was hoping that departure would be a start of something greater - and lead to a discovery of a great actor, but that was not meant to be.

reply

You have an advantage over me - I've not seen that (to be honest I wasn't even aware of it). I shall have to seek it out - thanks.

reply

He's got great range actually. Unfortunately, he didn't bother using any of it here.

reply

There was no place for range, the rock or not the rock. Even the father sequences were rushed without any chance for acting.

reply

True. I guess, since he's been championing this role for so long, I would have thought that he'd try for greater opportunities for that range. But as you said, the way the movie was written, there wasn't really much for him to do anything other than look angry, irritated, or slightly morose.

I've actually really enjoyed a lot of the big budget films from this year. I enjoyed Top Gun, The Batman, Doctor Strange, Thor, The Gray Man and I even thought Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was fun.

You're right though there have been plenty of big budget duds such as Jurassic World, Fantastic Beasts, Moonfall and Uncharted. I'd put Black Adam along with these films though, I think it's a mess but hopefully the DCU films can be improved with James Gunn now overseeing everything.

Still going strong. https://comicbook.com/movies/news/black-adam-box-office-week-3-18-million/?fbclid=IwAR2TQCF-fhnnQfvNqLRSv4e3CIupdLi16rhcImMMh9102QSqIorej5y4cQ8

Worldwide gross is $319M so far. If it wasn't so damn expensive, a recurring WB issue I noticed, that'd be good news. But it's still up in the air if this will turn a profit. I am surprised this isn't pulling a 'Venom' (or even the second Venom) and just raking in cash. It's a bitter pill but Dwayne Johnson will have to reassess his role in the DCU if this underperforms after all.
