Franklin's "Like a baby" response...to the cop?

The cop is telling him that the neighborhood is going to shit, that Franklin knows it, and asks how Franklin is sleeping at night, right?

Firstly, Franklin's smiling answer, "Like a baybeee" was pretty shitty, and just like that, had me thinking he deserves whatever punishment awaits him when he gets taken down. Like a baby, Franklin? Really dude?

Secondly, its weird having that reaction while also believing that Franklin's response was completely out of character for the guy. He's not just NOT a bad guy, he's shown that he's got a good head on his shoulders...and he chose an antagonistic response when speaking with a cop that's gunning for him?

Nah, he's shown himself to be way too smart for that. Because with that response, and the drawn-out, smiling way he said it, he might as well have come out and called the cop a pussy-ass-bitch and triple-dog dared him to try and arrest him on something, just try it, clownboy.

What a strange scene that I can't quite get out of my head. It just...doesn't fit somehow. What were they trying to do with it, you think? Lessen our sympathy for Franklin?

He believes if he weren't the one running drugs, it would be someone else who would possibly do much more damage to the neighborhood. Under his system he can maintain order, which is partly why he brought Man Boy into his operation. Someone like Leon would have created perpetual war. The other reason is about him being able to raise his own financial status in a way otherwise unavailable to him. He sees his mom working hard for years and still struggling to get by, while having to deal with an asshole for a boss. He doesn't want that for her or for others in his family.

Obviously he's getting a few things wrong here and this season we see him being confronted with the consequences of his way of life in a much more personal way than before. In the title shot there are 2 houses burning now, and I'm guessing the next few episodes there will be more. But also remember Franklin got his ass beat and robbed after his first drug deal and he made it through that, so I don't think it is over for him just yet.

I am kinda curious where they will go with this show without John Singleton.

Well sure nice to see that someone else is watching the show...and a well-spoken someone at that, good points Winslow.

And I wasn't sure what his justification was for his position, so that's helpful...but his Mom? Man that surprised the hell out of me. In fact, I can't remember seeing when it happened...when she suddenly became okay with it enough to actually be helping him out with the financial stuff. A pretty abrupt about face there...you remember that conversation by chance?

Yeah, Leon is a friggin hothead, good point.

But still...Franklin's "like a babyyyy" bugs me. I mean, maybe he does sleep like a baby...but is that something he'd say like that?

Didn't notice the houses burning...generally skip right past that part mentally, going to have to keep an eye on that.

Yep, there is definitely an argument to be made that you really can't blame someone in Franklin's situation for doing what he feels needs to be done to break the cycle for himself and his family...and yup, his Mom struggling to get by while working for a white man that preys on the poor?
Its weird...I know I shouldn't be rooting for Franklin, but I'm completely on the guy's side =P
