Song

what's the song the kids are singing around the first hour into the movie?

reply

one of them was a 'cover' of Marillion's Lavender from their Misplaced Childhood album (dilly dilly). really surprised to hear it in a Hallmark film but the redo was actually quite nice.

there was also the french childrens song Frère Jacques.

reply

It wasn't a cover of the Marillion song--it was a version of the song that Marillion referenced. The words are very old. It was also used in the recent Cinderella film:

sort of figured that since the lyrics were totally different except for the lavender, king, queen, dilly dilly parts. thanx for the link.

There has actually been several covers of this song, some containing different lyrics and some with different notes. Even Michael Jackson did a cover of the song. The song song was nominated for best original song in the 1949 Grammy buy "Baby It's Cold Outside" won the academy award,
It was performed by Burl Ives in the Disney movie "So Dear To My Heart".
Does anyone know what choir performed the song in Rioyal?

reply

The Burl Ives version has a different tune, though (it's the tune I learned as a child). I've found a few recordings using the tune in the movie, but they all seem to be relatively recent. Maybe the movie tune is the original English version? I know it's a traditional song.

As for the choir, it may have been a group assembled just for the soundtrack. Too bad the credits are far too small to read on the TV screen when Hallmark shows the movie. We'll probably have to wait for a DVD to be able to check.

The song they sing in the first rehearsal scene is "Frère Jacques," a French traditional children's song.
