Creed should have been an MMA fighter

To make him a little more relevant today. You could still have Rocky coaching him if he were an MMA fighter.

If they actually showed Creed turning away from boxing and joining MMA, much like many fighters and public interest has, that would actually make these movies pretty relevant. Rocky suddenly has to train somebody for a sport he knows nothing about. The audience gets to learn with him. That there is his a hit franchise with six movies in it.

I would have to agree. It gives Rocky and Creed a new challenge and changes the dynamics of the story. I don't even like MMA but it's a logical move.

There are still plenty of boxing fans....boxing is as relevant today as it was when the first Rocky came out!

reply

Let's not get crazy. There are boxing fans but it is not as relevant as it was 40 years ago. Not even close.

Agree.

Boxing is nowhere near as big as it was in '76.

The problem with boxing is that they thought pay TV and pay per view was the future. But going that route actually kept the sport out of view and subsequently out of the mind of many would be fans. The reason the NFL is so big is that it's been available on over the air TV for decades. It's been easy to find and watch and thus has been front and center for a lot of people, making them fans. MMA has been on basic cable channels for years thus making it easy to watch and become a fan. But boxing created a barrier to entry into fandom and has paid a heavy price for it. Without a compelling draw like Mike Tyson, people don't seek out boxing and won't pay for it.
