Just thought I'd bring up Rocky not throwing in the towel when Drago killed Apollo. Even if Rocky threw in the towel, it would've made no difference. The referee couldn't even stop it. Throwing in the towel would've made no difference. Drago would've kept hitting Apollo until he went down. The only way Rocky could've saved Apollo is if he physically got into the ring and stopped Drago from continuing to batter him. If you want you can say Rocky should've never allowed Apollo to go out there for the second round. Rocky could've stopped it there by not letting Apollo go out there.

And throwing in the towel does nothing during a real boxing match (but it's surely a spectacular cinematic move).

Only the referee can stop the fight. Or the cornerman can jump into the ring and instantly make his fighter be disqualified by doing this.

All these years I thought that throwing in the towel meant something. Hell, its even a saying. "What, so you're throwing in the towel then?". At least I think, anyway.
That's just Hollywood stuff?
Next you'll be telling me there really weren't quick-draws in the middle of town at high noon =P

Even though it's not official, throwing in the towel does usually cause the ref to stop the fight in reality.

Throwing in the towel does still happen in real life. Not sure what that other post is talking about.

In the 11th, Haye was sent through the ropes by a combination and by then McGuigan had seen enough as he threw in the towel to bring an end to Haye's punishment.

Too funny, forgot all about this, but yeah I looked it up a few days ago and yep, you're absolutely. From what I was able to gather though, throwing in the towel is ultimately more like signalling to the ref that you want to call it quits. Apparently there's been fights where the ref tossed it back out, feeling like the fighter was okay to continue.

But yeah, its definitely more than just a cinematic move, looks like.

I've seen plenty fights where the towel has been thrown in.

It happens all the time.
