He was advertised to be the bad guy here, but judging by what I've seen in the trailer he's one of the good guys. And watching him in action he reminds me of Doctor Strange, DS makes those golden shields and Mysterio's are green but still look rather similar.
shareKeep in mind that Mysterio's schtick is to create illusions to make people think something supernatural is happening when in reality, it's all smoke and mirrors. Additionally, he has posed as good guys in the past, including his very first appearance.

shareI would not be surprised if Mysterio isn't an ex-SHIELD agent who got his hands on some Chitauri tech and he's using it to assume the role of a Hero. The Chitauri tech is how and why he popped up on Fury's radar.
There will be little about Mysterio that will be mystical or supernatural in the traditional sense.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Tinkerer is supplying his tech. Tinkerer was never caught in Homecoming and he has plenty of alien tech himself. Also, in the comics, Tinkerer and Mysterio appeared at the same time (sort of).
