a thought about movie plots

When I read the synopsis of these Hallmark and Lifetime movies, I often think "But I've seen that one before." The plots are that similar! Don't get me wrong...I often watch them because they will be safe and feel-good, and some will be more enjoyable than others because of the quality of the acting or some original twist. They are much like the formula children's Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys books....written on a blueprint!

You've heard it before...there's only one plot to all love stories: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. Everything is a variation on that (girl meets girl, boy meets boy, boy gets dog, girl gets horse, child is estranged from parent, etc.....get it?) It's just that some stories are written/acted/produced so much better than others.

As for Hallmark movie plots, once you get past Christmas [boy/girl hates Christmas because of some old disappointment, but is redeemed by love; rich boy/girl has to interact with the common folk and becomes human in the process; boy/girl is unhappy with his/her life, but magically gets a chance to see what life would be like otherwise and learns that he/she wants the old life back (It's A Wonderful Life could sue),]...anyway, once you get past Christmas it's back to the old chestnut. Famous actors/singers go home and discover that they still love their old girlfriend/boyfriend; athletes have a devastating fail and walk away from their sport, only to be redeemed by love.

Basically, I'm saying: don't get all worked up. Almost every movie is just a pale imitation of a plot that has gone before. Along the line there are films that add something special that makes them a classic. I haven't seen it, but YOI may be one of those. Just remember that imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

Being a big fan of Yuri!!! on Ice and having seen this movie, there are a few overlapping generic plot points and both are about skating. Other than that, there really is no serious comparison between the two. This "controversy" became as ridiculous as it did due to copious amounts of social media rumor spreading, misinformation reporting, and some fans looking for something to get riled up about. The fact that the creator of Yuri!!! on Ice and the Hallmark Channel released statements both stating essentially that the works were independent of one another really should have quited down the craziness and, for the most part, or has.

As an anime fan, I would like to state to the fans who flooded these boards with complaints, some of what I read was not pleasant, unfounded, and did no favors for improving the "image" of the anime community. This movie was based on a novel written in 2009 and likely was in the planning stages at least a month or two before Yuri!!! on Ice aired. Acting based on pure emotion and social media gossip does not usually lead to good results.

Rebekah,
Enjoyed our IMDB communications over the years about Hallmark and such. Sorry they are taking down the system. Makes no sense to me. If you find a working Internet place that allows the kinds of questions and commentaries that these IMDB boards have provided, could you let me know? My email address is my screen ID here at Hotmail.com

Oh, and one last time ....

"What are you doing here?"

I certainly will. I'll miss seeing your posts. There is a blogger that reviews all the hallmark movies but I'll have to see if he allows comments. He gives them all 3 stars though. Weird.

Rebekah,
See my post at A Royal Winter -- I think you might be convinced, too 😀

Well said. I couldn't agree more.
