Is this the first time humanity has been "rebooted"?

Who knows how many previous trials had failed to meet mother's exacting requirements, before she decided to while them all out and start anew. For all we know, this could be 20,000 years in the future. And 6 trials deep. And it means mother would have become a God.

Kind of existentialy horrifying when you think too much about it.

Nah we are not

Seems that there was a limited (although sizeable) supply of embryos but not 20000 years worth.

reply

they had like 60,000 of them.

reply

You could theoretically produce embryos from DNA sequences in a database. The ones Mother has ready to go may have been created that way, and more could be made if necessary. But the presence of artifacts from the civilization we recognize in the Woman's cargo container home - including the container itself and the grounded ship - argue against a far future date and in favor of this being the first reboot. Although I don't doubt the AI will reboot again if it thinks the new society is going in the wrong direction.

Good point about that ship, the containers, and the condition they were in--they give some indication of the timeline. I suppose the canned food does too--that doesn't last forever. And the new farm was only 6 months old.

reply

No, the first time was when God flooded the Earth and rebooted with Noah and his family.

reply

you seem to be getting fictional universes confused. Take your crazy fundamentalism to a place where it is actually relevant to the subject at hand.
