Breaking the mold...

A leading man with an actual beard vs the usual perpetual three day stubble.

Lots of beards AND stubble these days.

Breaking the mold would be a leading man in a non-Hallmark production who doesn't have either one, a beard or stubble.

Dudes were clean shaven in the 40s, 50s and early 60s.

By the late 60s and 70s though, what with Vietnam and ascendent progressivism, the facial hair came out in force.

But the beards came off in the Conservative 80s and 90s ('member how remarkable Don Johnson's 3-day stubble was on Miami Vice?).

Then we got mired in 2 unpopular wars, and progressivism was once again ascendant, and then, lo and behold, facial hair was back!!!

And now, even with Trump in the White House, the culture itself is still very progressive, so I don't think the beards will be going bye bye anytime soon.

That, my friend, will take a resurgence in Conservatism. And I just don't see that happening for a while.

Damn...
