Potential to Disaster (*** Spoilers ***)

I really think the premise for the most part for this film was creepy and interesting. But there are so many decisions in this film that took away from it. The wife was begging me to fast forward through the film, not because it was scary, because it was boring. It definitely wasn't the worse film I have ever seen, but it was definitely disappointing, and I think we have to lay this squarely on the choices made in making this film.

1. The parents. While a good looking couple together, they looked way too old to be the parents of such a young child.
2. The door itself. It would be very difficult to setup why anyone would bring an antique door found in the woods to put up as a closet door, but OK, I think maybe a little bit more around this would have helped. I get that we are supposed to buy that the wife is some kind of crafts person, but it just didn't seem very plausble to me as depicted in the film.
3. The deaf shaman. While it was VERY cool to do this casting wise, it was too much. He had too much screen time and was difficult to understand and in many ways this took away from the mood. Not to mention his attire in the woods was just ridiculous. To be fair, the whole film just being the character rambling for the entire third act it wouldn't matter if it was a deaf person or not. It was a weird choice.
4. No reaction. The parents didn't look too concerned in the woods in the third act. The father looked mostly confused and bored. Sitting the whole time was a horrible decision. Really the whole third act was a mess.
5. I didn't care. The boy was not likable, in my opinion. So I never felt any urgency when he went missing. And the parents didn't seem to make me care either. If anything it almost seemed as if the door was doing them a favor.
6. How did they pay bills? It was implied the father was working in exchange for the boy being able to attend the private school and that the mom was not currently working (but it took her 8 months to unpack?). So how did they pay the bills? When the boy was expelled and the father said he was now being paid cash, but not much, they were stressed over how they would pay the bills.
7. The ending. To be clear, I love the moral dilemma the parents went through and decided on. Very dark and I think most people would do the same if they admit or not. However, did the school really need a random red door in a hallway?

Anyway, yeah, I'm rambling and ranting. Not sure why I felt compelled to do so about this very forgettable film. It could have been great. Maybe.
