He's just not a very good actor. As far as directing he has a style that's easy to pick-up up on like Wes Anderson (but not nearly as good). I thought he was really bad in Jojo Rabbit as Hitler. He acted like someone who thought that's how actors should act. He just needs to stay behind the camera.
