Why make a show like this so inaccurate?

Examples, just from the 1st episode:

- The portrayal of Marcus Aurelius is ridiculous. He did not have Cassius killed nor did he poison Faustina, as it's heavily implied here.

- Commodus was 13 in 175, not 25 or whatever he is here.

- Faustina died in Halala in modern-day Turkey, not in Germania.

Life! Don't talk to me about life.

This is the ONLY thing that prevents me from enjoying this show. I've read Aurelius's Meditations, and his portrayal here is inaccurate at best, slanderous at worst. Not to mention the historical inaccuracies you mention.

It's a shame really, this had the potential to be a good one.

reply

It's funny you mention that, I just read Meditations, and when I saw they were doing this show I was interested, but it doesn't seem like the same guy.

I'M AGAINST IT.

It would be forgivable if this were just another costume drama, but the "documentary" presentation would lead you to think that the story being told is more or less accurate. And they get so many details wrong ? like wine being stored in glass bottles instead of terracotta jars. (Roman glass was a luxury material.)

I agree. Everything would have been much better if they dropped the "documentary" side of it.

Exactly. I'm wondering what the experts that are shown commenting throughout the episodes, thought after seeing the final show. I bet there was a lot of eye rolling going on.

Yeah. That was the final straw for me too. I just couldn't get over that fact and am still having recurring nightmares over it.

I think that my life has been good, but it's time to end it now.

If the opposite of Love is indifference, what's the opposite of Hate?

That's annoying. I really enjoyed the history mixed with drama- it really brings it to life. But if it's inaccurate...(I can forgive the glass bottles type thing, but changing the actual events).Grrr.
