Questions about the "her"

The way I saw it was that she was one of those old-timey pagan deities that required a sacrifice for a good harvest. I don't think she wanted to be fed all the blood and body parts though, but it was the only way to make anything grow there, so they were essentially force-feeding her to make the island fertile.
