I just watched this film. I took this film as a metaphor for anxiety disorder, as the film alludes. The mom was in a physical abusive marriage. She has PTSD, as well as possible 'brain damage' - maybe.
Mother starts to see her ex husband in her son's actions (at the beginning of the film) when killing the spider. She believes she's sees her ex's violent tendencies manifesting in her son. (Lol I think I just repeated myself).
Though not too clear, I believe the mom had stop taking her medication, in the 3rd act, deciding to battle her depression/anxiety via going down the metaphorical black hole (her mind).
The last scene, imo, means she's not well yet. She'll always been on guard, on the lookout of when or if her son turns into his father (father like son).
[I believe "Bobaduk" did it much better.]
Or, it's just some evil creatures making their way to the surface via the sinkhole to wreck havoc on humanity.
Now I'm off to look for a film breakdown on YT.

That is a good summary. Thanks. I was also thinking The Bobbaduk (sp?) 15 minutes into the movie and it does do the whole metaphor thing much better.

I thought the message came across nicely in this movie. Is it as good as the Bobaduk? It doesn’t really matter in my opinion (everyone speaks so highly of that movie, but I don’t even remember it much anymore).
This movie had me engaged throughout. The acting was good and the film itself was beautiful. It did exactly what it aimed to do and then some. It was supposed to be an art house flick, so some meandering was expected on my end.
@RoboReCop’s breakdown is great for those who need a little bit of clarification. I liked this one quite a bit despite some of its flaws posted above.
