Why does Gerard Butler look so awful?

And it's not his age. Plenty of stars his age and older look fine. His face looks bloated, puffy, red and rough. I don't know what the director was thinking, letting him on camera looking so bad. What's up with him?

Pretty typical for the Scottish. Especially the boozy ones. Their faces turn into throw pillows when they get older.

One article had this to say about his appearance in this film. "The older Gerard Butler gets, the less and less he looks like an Action star and more like some bloated dad who’s wondered onto set"
