Of all the SS agents they could pick to leave alive to frame, they pick the one guy who has averted two separate world disasters and is(or at least should be) beyond reproach. After the second movie, where the entire world saw him swooping in at the least minute to save the presidents life, nobody should believe for a damn second that he would attempt to assassinate another one.

shareYeah, I remember thinking along the same line when watching it. But then again, being the most decorated agent also means that he's probably the most equipped to do it, and let's not forget about his medical condition and the fact that he hides it.

I agree they should've used his condition as a red herring - or SOME thing, because otherwise Banning's absolutely above reproach
Reminds me of the fourth Die Hard movie - if I'm recalling correctly, Cliff Curtis's character knew from the get-go that McClane was one of the good guys, even if he was working on his own
Then there's "China Moon," where Ed Harris, the best homicide detective, is targeted for frame-up specifically because he'd solve the crime if they framed anyone else.

Yeah it’s completely stupid.
It honestly makes no sense and considering how highly trained he is, there should have been massive red flags that all this evidence was so easily found like he’s some rank amateur.
The dark web folder is really the only thing I can believe someone of his skill set would make a mistake on. Everything else was so obviously pointing to mike that it should have been like ah hey why is this so easy. Throw in the last two movies events and they should be thinking “yeah what makes more sense, that someone is playing us to chase the wrong leads and destabilise us by going after one of our top people, or the most heroic person out of all of us who has saved the president twice who is in line to be director Decided that he would throw it all away and kill the president for $10mil and almost get himself killed too.
Just it’s really badly done. Even trying to make it seem the medical stuff is a potential reason, it’s like he would still get decent money and retire and potentially go into the private sector and make shitloads in a desk job if money really was an issue.
Very dumb.

In real life sometimes the most upright person is the one you would not suspect has cracked up at last. Now it his time to crack. As they say in the film, when he reached the high post of director was the time for him to plan something like this...
They mentioned how he was going to be retiring, and they suspected this was his one chance for a big payday. The problem is, he wasn't poor. He had a huge, beautiful home, and I'm sure being in charge of the secret service pays very well. It seemed an unlikely motive, but that was the reasoning.
shareMaybe the VP knew about his therapy and was going to use that as motive for him attacking the President. They never intended to take him alive so he they assumed wouldn't be able to defend himself.
