Jafar was awful

Disney knocked it out of the park with live casting for Beauty and the Beast and while they did a pretty good job for Aladdin, the character of Jafar is portrayed terribly. He's not menacing enough, not evil enough, he lacked the dry wit that the cartoon version had. Every other character was played sufficiently, Will Smith's spin on the genie was fine. It was fun movie, but Jafar was awful.

Yeah, they could've found a better person that looked and feel the part.

He's not menacing enough, not evil enough

He was played by a non-caucasian white. Do you really expect them to make him really evil? C'mon...

reply

Yeah, I agree. Jafar was the weakest part of the movie.

reply

I am the opposite. I felt he was the strongest character. Better than the original.

SPOILERS.

I love how he steals the lamp under Aladdin’s nose. It shows he had more skills than just magic. The original Jafar was more of a snobby bureaucrat who couldn’t do anything without his magic or Iago.

Completely agree. I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. The sets, costumes, and live action original songs were outstanding imo. My favorite part of the film was the Prince Ali song; that whole sequence was amazing. I found myself kind of bored actually in between the songs. I think the biggest problem for me was Jafar who was not sinister or evil enough; I just didn't like the actor's delivery and portrayal of the character. As you put it, he didn't seem menacing at all. I also thought the climax would have been better if he turned into a snake too.

His bird was pretty bland too. Iago was such a great character in the cartoon

reply

I thought he had some funny parts, but knew that all of the animal characters were going to kind of take a backseat in this film compared to the cartoon.

reply

I thought he was good. The cartoon version would never work in a live action movie.

reply

I also thought he was a weak part of the film. Maybe it’s the plain hairstyle, the facial hair. But he just seemed too ordinary looking. Looked more like a henchman than the big boss villain

reply

Wholeheartedly agree. Very weak portrayal. Though weirdly enough his costume looked awesome.
